Dec 15 (Reuters) - Los Angeles Unified School District schools were closed on Tuesday after the district received a credible terror threat, KTLA TV station reported, citing school officials and police.

Media reports said a news conference was expected on Tuesday morning.

Almost 700,000 students affected. Superintendent said they would be releasing more details later in the day.

This is a mess. The districts cover more than 700 square miles and there are over 900 schools and almost 200 charter schools. Students and employees have been told to stay home. If the kids are home, chances are their parents will have to miss work. Schools will have to be searched. All resources will be directed to the schools. In a state that's already broke, this is a real problem.

Amazing how one tweet/post/call can bring an entire school district to it's knees.

We live in very scary times now and there's no real solution. Even if it was a prank, it has to be taken seriously and threats like this can shut down or jeopardize airports, subway systems, hospitals, schools, etc. There is no end to the ways someone can "terrorize" our nation.

It is a mess, indeed. However, if you think about what happened at Columbine, Sandy Hook, and the other schools with mass shooters, I am sure the parents would gladly miss a day of work not to have their children slaughtered or witnessing slaughter. I agree that the district's decision is costly and that state budgets are strained beyond the limits, but what price can you put on the lives of youngsters and teens????

I am hoping that this threat was not a prank, as it so often is.

I truly hope this is a prank. But it must be taken seriously. What has always crossed my mind, is what if something like this is a dupe prank to draw law enforcement away from a different target.

I don't know if this is a prank or not, but it's better to be safe than sorry.

When I was in high school, way back in the 1980's, some kid called in a bomb threat, and my school was evacuated.

So, those sort of "pranks" have been going on for decades.

But as I said from the very beginning, and I cannot stress this enough, they MUST take it seriously, and I am glad that they do.

If it is a hoax, it's one heck of a hoax. To take such drastic measures, seems like it isn't a hoax.

Many will be affected. The teachers, children, bus drivers, staff employees, parents (working parents must pick up their chidren), baby sitters, bus drivers, and others. I am sure the roads and freeways will be impacted with cars traveling to go and get the minors.

Too many unstable people in this country trying to kill us. They said 640,00 students will not be attending school today. They said someone stated it was in a backpack. We all know most children carry backpacks to school. It is better to be safe than sorry. It is sad that our county is not being protected. We have become reactive instead of proactive.

Our news reported that the NY threat was "similar", and kids were already in classrooms at 8am, so the decision was whether to evacuate or not. (I would think it would be a logistical nightmare!)

In LA, it was 5am and they decided to err on the side of caution. The shooting in nearby San Bernardino is on everyone's minds, so it's hard to criticize the decision.

NYC got the exact same threat, determined that it was a hoax and life moved on.

The bad guys WIN if they get everyone so scared that we stop living life.
