Make sure all screens are repaired and all openings in foundation and around windows are sealed. If you have central A/C make sure that the electric line which is usually covered by a gutter downspout is sealed off on the bottom with foam insulation-- spray on works well and hardens up. If left opened, the mice can climb up into the attic areas.

Mouse traps are the best and placed along the walls (mice usually travel along the walls) Peanut butter works best as a bait (not cheese).

Some have had good luck with spearmint oil on cotton balls-- they might dislike that scent. Make sure that drainage pipes are sealed with steel wool (again keeps them from climbing the pipes to seek warmer areas of your home).

Some have luck with cats or rodent seeking breeds of dogs too.

we have a reliable pest control company who comes in once a month. that helps A LOT! we found a dead one near one of our sump pumps in the basement recently. the pump is quite dry right now and he said they are probably coming through the pipes and then up on the lines.

Folks who know me, know I am an animal lover. So much so, a mouse got into my family room earlier in the year- don't know how - and I opened the back door and actually was able to usher it out of the house.

A mouse somehow got between my walls in the family room late this summer and expired.

I am genuinely sorry if this upsets any reader with a tender heart towards mice. I had a tender heart once too, but the smell was too much for me.

I live near a field and I use D-con bait stations - in my garage and the opposite end of the yard.

First and most importantly - find out where they are getting in and seal it off. Then set traps, and set out poison - unless you have a pet - can't have poisoned mice around a pet. Remember , if you see one you probably have many!

I saw a mouse in my house a few times. I had seen them in my garage, because some bird seed had spilled out onto the floor. I called the exterminator who put poison chunks/squares in the garage. That got rid of them very quickly. I do have a dog but carried him to the car while the poison was out. It was well worth it to me to call the exterminator.

Old fashion mouse traps are the best. Don't use glue ones. And poison will poison other wildlife if they eat the mouse after it eats the bait.

@hovis Mice hate the smell of bleach, peppermint oil & steelwool.

Get steelwool and place the cotton inside; tight...pour peppermint all over the cotton..... place all over the house or barn.

Or use bleach in the cotton..... keep adding the bleach and peppermint oil for the smell.

Steelwool should be forced into open holes where they are coming into the home or barn.

Best to close the home and barn up tight....where no openings are any where.

Call an exterminator and secure your house and make sure there are no openings where they can get in.

We had mice last year. (I hate mice and I mean hate to the point of just thinking of them I could vomit! lol.).

We hired an exterminator, and we still have the exterminator come monthly even though we haven't seen a mouse for 11 months. Its peace of mind b/c I never want to see a mouse in here again!

(We live behind farming fields, the mice we had were field mice)

PS) We have 3 cats, none of them got the mice, when they saw one they sat and stared at it. Exterminator said the cats are too domesticated i.e. over fed and lazy (lol) Joking! But they did just stare at the 1 mouse like it was a toy!

We have a mouse problem - outside only.

We've been using a "Rat Zapper" that runs on batteries. You put some DRY food (we use dry cereal bits) inside, and set the trap. The mouse enters to get the food and gets zapped (and dies).

Amazon sells them for around $35.

My late husband used mouse traps baited with cheese or peanut butter.

Right now I am visualizing a mouse trying to "speak" with a mouth full of peanut butter. lol
