END OF AN ERA

Today at Noon, the very last C-17 will leave Long Beach Airport. Located in Long Beach, Ca.

It's the last C-17; it's the last aircraft built in Long Beach; and it's the last aircraft built in the L.A. Basin of Southern California.

The once vibrant aviation industry in Southern California is now finished.

North American, gone.

Northrop, gone.

Rockwell, gone.

Lockheed, gone.

Hughes, gone.

Douglas, gone.

McDonnell Douglas, gone.

Boeing, gone.

The last lift off fight was powerful to watch as it flew toward the East, and out of sight.

Raytheon is still around but they are different from the aircraft builders.

I know you're bemoaning the demise of the aircraft industry in California, but consider the B-52 Superfortress. It first flew in 1954, yet is today still an important part of our air defense system. It's expected to remain in service until about 2040. What other aircraft has such a record? They are now flown out of Barksdale AFB in Louisana, Minot AFB in N. Dakota and our base in Guam.

Since it was made by Boeing, I assume it's a product of Washington state.

I was not "bemoaning" anything. I was sharing information about the end of an era.

All the planes are old....but they are still being used.

Just the vibrations causes everything on the planes to move. In time the plane could come undone while in flight.

Sounds to me like that's exactly what you're doing, which is not a bad thing. The loss of an industry must have a huge economic impact.

Why would ANY company stay in CA given the unfavorable business climate and a dysfunctional state government? The companies that CA lost have moved to states with a more favorable business climate and a state government that really wants businesses to thrive.

I also will bemoan the end of the LongBeach plant. It was always there at the corner of Lakewood Blvd and Carson St. Douglas Aircraft, then McDonnelll-Douglas, then final was Boeing. My DS worked in the C-17 building, as a painter. AirForceOne was painted there and he was part of crew doing the painting. It provided jobs for generations of people. There is a Boeing plant in Mesa,AZ that makes Apache Helos. It is sad so many jobs have gone by the wayside and it is okay to bemoan, or mourn them---------tedEbear

I guess we can make a choice to see things

as sad or not. There are probably many new things

being started up and created there as well.

Times change and we are flexible people.

You're talking about regretting though or being

unhappy for the change and that's bemoaning.

It would be interesting to know what new

companies has California gained.

Technology is a big growth industry there.

Oh geesh..... I was sharing a END of an ERA.

Not "bemoaning" as some seem to say.

I feel pride to have been part of that group and era. Part of that history.

I was honored to have been picked to be a Class A (top of the group) and a VIP Award several times. I was a Structural Inspector in Qualty Control on the New Designs of planes. To hold the position we all had to be down right good with high intelligence on building planes.

I traveled there today to still be a part of that last lift off. Like I said already it was powerful to see that last lift off heading toward the East. It was a thrill and I felt pride that mankind can build something out of metal and it flys like a eagle.

It was my pleasure to have been part of this End Of An Era.

It was a fun pridefull time for all of us there at the Air Port. We were at the Air Port's run way for the lift off. It made a turn around to fly over all of us. All of us cheered and clapped our hands over our heads. All of us was over flowing with pride.

We did this everytime a new design took it first flight. Sure we could build it but could it fly? Powerful times to experience.

Todays event was flying out the last plane.

Boeing no longer builds planes there. Your friend could still be working in a small office that has not shut down yet. Everyone has moved out. Empty buildings all over the place.

My guess....soon that air port will shut down.

All I can say is what I see. The Boeing sign was removed long ago.

No signs around to do with any of the companies that built the planes.
