Anyone Work for a Business that Closes for a Week?

Many advertising agencies in NYC that we work with (and in Toronto too) will be closed the entire week between Christmas and New Year's.

I first noticed that a number of Canadian businesses did this - now the largest ad agencies in the world are doing the same.

I don't know how they are compensated in NYC. I asked the Tim Horton's ad people in Toronto and they said it was an extra week of vacation (paid) for the whole staff....not part of their usual vacation package.

Anyone else work in an industry that does this? Paid or not?

My husbands business doesn't actually close, but they might as well because most of his customers are on vacation that week, it's always dead. He always takes the week of Christmas off and this year he's taking the week off Christmas and New Years off. He also took this Thanksgiving week off too.

Nope although I am kind of hitting paydirt this year holiday wise. I had Thursday and Friday off paid. (Had to edit this as I didn't know what day it was, sigh).

Next is Christmas Eve and Day and New Years Eve and Day. I enjoy 4 day weekends (paid), lol.

our business doesnt close for an entire week......just for july 4th, memorial day, labor, christmas day, and new years day.

i do know that our reglar dentist closes his large office during the week of christmas to new years AND during the week that public school kids go back to school. these weeks are in addition to the time off he gives as part of an individual employees paid time off.

My daughter works in advertising, they have a skeleton crew. Everyone works one day the week of Christmas and one day the week of New Years.

My neice works for a major advertising agency in Chicago. The offices shut down from December 25th until January 4th this year.

The company my husband worked for when were married always gave the week off between Christmas and New Years, that's why we got married in December!

My brother in law owns an engineering firm that does back up power for the FAA and VA. He closes down the week of Christmas because no one from the FAA that oversees those types of projects is in so he closes down usually the Friday before Christmas and doesn't open back up until after NYD.

My brother also gets the month of December off. He works in Korea for a private defense firm and he hasn't worked in December for a while now. He is overseas a lot though so it is nice that he doesn't have to go in.

I used to. Actually, we would get the day after Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve, Christmas, the day after Christmas, worked a half day of New Years Eve and New Years Day. When those holidays fell on the weekend, we also got an extra day. Don't worry, we killed ourselves in between. In NYC, business is very slow during the time between Christmas and New Years.

Used to. Time off the day before Christmas Eve through Jan. 1. Paid.

My husband works for a company that closes before Christmas, and opens up the first work day after New Years. They are paid. The company does not take many of the usual holidays many workers are given. They work Martin Luther, President's Day, Veteran's Day, Columbus and a few more I forgot. These are Holidays the schools, government,and banks often take.

The type of work often has a lot to do with this leave at Christmas. Many businesses are too slow, have finished contracts so it behoves them to close. Because many in management take off traditionally during the Holidays, the employees have followed suit.

Many businesses, like all three of my daughters will not close. They trade choosing vacations on the first of every year. If one employee chooses that week, no one else can have it. My daughter gets 7 weeks a year, and it is hard to take a week at a time where she works. No one does her work...hahahaha,

My husband's company strongly encouraged employees to take off the week using paid vacation days. I resented the pressure to take the time in the dead of winter:/

I work in the Aerospace Industry, and yes we are closed from the 21st of December and return on the 4th of January.

I wondered if they still did that. I worked for the Air Force in contracting and most of the companies we negotiated with were closed from before Christmas until after New Years.

Canada also has a Civic Holiday in August.

Why? Because it's August and it's a good time for a long weekend!

I have worked in the Aerospace Industry for over 20+ years and all of the companies that I know still have a shut down period.. I swear that's one of the main reasons why I stay in the industry. I love having the Christmas break off every year.

I worked in a museum that had broken AC. The Museum was housed in an original 1910 Carnegie Library building. The ac never worked. in one part of buidking...the area we were in!! So when the temps rose to over 89 in the office we had to go home, LOL! We also closed Christmas to New Years, as an annual closing. No one ever came in we were told. I didn't like doing that because I loved to work, especially when it was slow. I could work on displays easier, and there were no tours to give. After the City clamped down, we stayed open during the holidays.
