it can be both. Some people are more inclined to look at all aspects of a problem and systematically think it through. Where for others it is more of a learned skill.

Both, imo.

Some years ago, I was interviewed for a book written by a well known college professor. I was asked which class I took in undergrad and grad school taught me the most. I said classes on logic.

IMO teaching logic should begin in elementary school. It is of the utmost importance.

I've always been logical, reality-based, thinker. That probably began as a survival mechanism from the time I was a very young child.

In that, I guess it could be classified as both. Conditioning (nurture, or the lack thereof) caused me to not be very emotional, especially with things that need NOT be emotionalized. But nature (the most fundamental desire to survive) also had me quickly come to the same ways of thinking.

I don't think very many things are totally cut and dried - black or white. I think most things are a combination of factors, some more complicated than others.

I was gonna say innate. After thinking about it, I realized most behavior is learned: e.g., 'the apple doesn't fall far from the tree", so I believe it's learned through example.

School systems teach how to memorize. Not a process of logical discovery and thoughtful exploration.

They create clones of information....even if that information has long been proven wrong ...such as history...they keep telling the students to memorize the book.

No wonder most find it hard to think for their self and that allows them to be lead around...only to follow others....or join groups that again think for them.

When a person thinks for their self....starts talking about another idea all the clones jump them to shut them down.

I believe it can be either or both. Most people accomplish things in life because of "THEIR will to do so", along with some hard work and "real life" experiences. Ever notice that the more "real life" experiences you have had, the easier it becomes to understand what is and what IS NOT logical? I certainly have seen and felt it.

I think it is a combination of both. People are born with certain personalities, but a good education teaches analytical skills. We are now living in a high-information society, and I pity anyone who doesn't have the skill set to analyze information. An analytical person is always asking: Does this information make sense? A lie may be easier to ascertain. Half-truths, twisting of the truth, requires some judgment to investigate and determine truth. Fortunately, we all have access to the huge resource of the Internet to facilitate this process.

Your view is obviously based on your own experience. I was taught / expected to review the facts and come to an independent conclusion, which could be backed with reason. This was true in both my home and in school. If you were not, that is a loss for you, but it means that sadly, you don't have the experience to judge the experiences of others.

I admit that I am not privileged to know the "masses", but I do know many, many people who do know how to think for themselves, use logic, reason, and expect those with whom the interact by choice to do the same. It is sad if you don't have such people in your life, but that doesn't mean truth is lost.

Love this question, as a real believer in reason, and logic. An unspported, unreasoned 'view' is as bad to me than an out-right lie.

I think many of us gravitate to logical thinking by nature, but as I was taught it as a child, I'm not a good judge. Wish I knew a way to encourage / educate more people to review facts, and consider them logically to form conclusions.

I do find your take very truthful. Being around minors where I do volunteer work I haven't yet met in the 100's I've been around, actual individual thinkers. Just because one reads books in certain cubject or courses, doesn't mean they are intelligent, skilled, or critical thinkers.

My generation was perhaps the last to be real thinkers, innovators, and progressive individuals. Sad for America.

I agree that it's very distressing that more and more people tend to just let somebody else do their 'thinking' for them. They believe all kinds of ridiculous things because, I can only imagine, they WANT to believe what somebody is telling them and they don't care enough to figure anything out or actually find FACTS. It's quite troubling, IMO.

I've never been a very trusting person and, while I'm probably slightly on the far end of that, I think it makes a lot more sense to seek facts and truths than just believing what would give one comfort or what they WISH it was.

Perhaps, to some degree, analytical thinking is a bit of a lost art. It's a shame. Too many blind followers for my comfort.

I do know the masses and the masses talked with me all the time. I wrote for over 15 years that went all around the world. They wrote me and we all exchanged ideas. I talked with all races, religions, and all kinds of humans with their ways of loving each other. Every subject was covered over the years.

Still.....I hold to the fact our school systems are creating clones that memorize.

First of all, 'fact' and 'opinion' are not the same, and unless you attended every school, you can't know. So, respectfully your view or our schools is your opinion.

Secondly, no where did I 'tell you what you think'.

Thirdly, I don't need to say 'what you are like' or 'what you think'- your posts do that.

Much of what we think growing up has to do with what our family culture is. We learn first from our progenitors and the behavior they model for us. Our cognitive processes are a different story. Those are inborn. However, schools nowdays, at least where I live and have taught, try to emphasize critical thinking and analysis, comparison/contrast/ drawing conclusions, etc. through a variety of projects which in no way reflect rote memorization. That goes not only for my subject of language arts (literature, composition, debate), but also for math, science, history, etc. We also can't ignore genetic predisposition and actual life experience that can affect how we approach a problem or situation.
