Finally, Anonymous is using its skill to go after a target that deserves to be disrupted.

Excerpt:

"Hacker group Anonymous have declared war against ISIS after the attacks in Paris on Friday night.

Posting a video on YouTube, the group said it would use its knowledge to "unite humanity" and warned the terrorists to "expect us".

Behind their signature mask, a spokesperson speaking in French said: "Anonymous from all over the world will hunt you down.

"You should know that we will find you and we will not let you go.

"We will launch the biggest operation ever against you."

Every time I read about this group I think about The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. Nothing was too intricate, complicated, or difficult for that group. Three cheers for the future success of Anonymous!

@Puzzle Piece, well, actually, I was referring to the books because I've read them all. And I have no doubt that what the fictitious hackers in the books were able to accomplish could be accomplished by a group like Anonymous as well. Just like the character Mitch Rapp in all of the Vince Flynn books. You don't know what you don't know, and when it comes to the super capabilities of the government and some individuals inside the government, you would definitely be surprised by what you don't know. Just sayin'.

"Anonymous has targeted ISIS for a number of months following the attacks on the Paris offices of satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo and its hack of U.S. CENTCOM's Twitter account. The group has uncovered the Twitter accounts of ISIS members and hacked a number of the group's sites.

The hacktivist group has dismantled at least 149 of ISIS’s affiliated websites, flagged approximately 101,000 Twitter accounts and nearly 6,000 propaganda videos, U.S. magazine Foreign Policy estimates."

Another story from another source, Independent (not familiar with this source). Apparently Anonymous has begun leaking details from these accounts:

Their cyber attack involve a technique called ‘distributed denial of service’, which means they overload the site until it goes offline.

Anonymous has begun leaking the personal information of suspected extremists, after it "declared war" on Isis in the wake of the deadly attacks in Paris.

The activist collective is assembling lists of the Twitter accounts and websites of extremists, in an attempt to have them taken down. At least one post seen by The Independent contains details including the physical address of a person it claims is an Isis recruiter in Europe.

None of the details that have been shared could be independently confirmed, and Anonymous activists have wrongly identified alleged extremists in the past. But if true the details shared include the physical addresses and names of those the activists claim are involve in recruitment.

What they need to hack are plots and details, not addresses. If Anonymous actually was able to hack into online "conversations" between terrorists/groups and either post the plans publicly, so that ISIL and others knew they couldn't hide, or turn the info over to various governments, that would be invaluable.

Sometimes, the unconstrained can accomplish much. But they are still loose cannons, so, helpful one day, not so much the next. But I'm certainly not anti-Anon, just cautious about the long run.
