Individuals on the FBI’s terrorist watchlist are not prevented from legally purchasing firearms, but two lawmakers want to change that. FBI data from last year show that people on the watchlist were cleared to purchase guns 94 percent of the time.

Between 2004 and 2014, the FBI completed 2,233 background checks involving individuals on the watchlist. Only 190 individuals were declined, according to the Government Accountability Office (GAO). The GAO does not have data on how many firearms purchases were completed because dealers are not required to submit that information to the FBI.

“If the only mark on your record is that you are on the watchlist, you are allowed to purchase a firearm,” said David Maurer, the GAO's director of justice and law enforcement issues.

Yep, military recruiters can not have a gun in their office but the people on a watch list can have a gun.

I guess if they have a loophole they have the power to close it. Don't you think? Background checks are done at the point of sale. This is their problem.

@Nancy Drew apples and oranges. It's a job requirement versus what so many people like to SHOUT about...rights. If you work in the post office, you can't carry a gun but you can own one in your home.

I know someone who served 4 yrs in Iraq. Issued a military weapon. When they came back, they wanted to buy a hunting rifle and were denied. In 6th grade, (no joke) a swiss army knife fell out of their backpack on the bus and it was on their permanent record.

Just one of those things I shake my head at.

@Nancy Drew apples and oranges. It's a job requirement versus what so many people like to SHOUT about...rights. If you work in the post office, you can't carry a gun but you can own one in your home.

I just can't imagine people actually fighting to make it possible for not on;y those on the Federal watchlist but Domestic abusers as well to obtain firearms.

Lawmakers have introduced bills over the years to try to prevent suspected terrorists from purchasing firearms and explosives. None, however, have passed because of strong opposition by the gun lobby.

The National Rifle Association which opposed previous bills, argued that the watchlist is too broad because it includes people who are still being investigated by authorities.

I'm sure you are probably aware that in many states it is possible to purchase a firearm with only a drivers license, no permit, no background check, no waiting period.

So, whose problem is it?

Honestly, why do some of you people care about this when you are for the immigration of Syrian refugees, 95% being able bodied strong young men.

Maybe some can enlighten me here.

The terrorists in France and that ethnic group live close to one another - a community. The terror group planned their deeds for weeks. I can't believe others in their community didn't know this and THEY REMAIN COMPLACENT. Why is that? The same will happen in other parts of the world because folks like that believe well, it's just what they do.

I think it's utterly shameful that in many states convicted domestic batterers are allowed to buy weapons because the NRA fights for their rights to do so. basically, they're fighting for the rights of the watch list terrorists too.
