The government can't do it. It's considered violating people's "rights". We've pretty well tied the gov't's hands regarding being able to track them.

That's exactly the problem. Look at all the uproar about phone calls, email message, etc., being intercepted or reviewed, all the calls to action to stop our government from "snooping" on us. They're da--ed if they do and da--ed if they don't.

In addition, much of the terrorist groups' electronic exchanges now are going underground, away from the open media like Twitter and into encrypted apps or the dark web. This issue lends itself to cheap shots against our government but technically and legally is not nearly as easy as people want to make it seem.

Individuals or private groups are not constrained by freedom of speech protections. The government is and it is a very fine line when it comes to suppressing speech, even inflammatory or recruiting tweets.

In the case of Syria the situation is so convoluted the enemy of my enemy can still be an enemy. Re. Snowden... perhaps he cannot be or should not be categorized as either.

Agree. The platitude sounds simple, but identifying "the enemy" sometimes is quite subjective.

Perhaps it takes someone doing something wrong or bad or dangerous or illegal, to wake people up, to make them see the vulnerability in things, to see the lack of security, the lack of ability of protecting us, etc. Maybe what could happen without the exposure and those who failed to do their jobs, would be far worse in the long run.

Every one, and every organization needs to be kept on their toes.
