Colateral damage

How do you wage a war without colateral damage? What do you think?

There are lots of terrorists in this country so maybe we should just bomb the heck out of the US, too. Collateral damage - no biggie, right?

I don't know - smart alecky stuff aside, there are degrees where there will understandably be collateral damage and degrees where it's just bombing a whole place, destroying thousands, just to eradicate a few, and it doesn't make sense at all.

I just think that, over all, it's a scary mentality to not value any of the innocents in a scenario where you can find other ways to take out the bad guys.

The world is now dealing with ISIS because we (and our Allies) took out Saddam Hussein and Gaddafi. We were warned numerous times that we would be stirring up a hornet's nest but our leaders did not listen.

eta: and yes Iraq suffered tremendous collateral damage.

WOW... the last time I recalled the the words , "collateral damage' causing so much unrest was during the Oklahoma City bombings in 1995.

You don't. Until we accept the idea of mass casualties the way we did in WW II with 10,000 or more dead in a single day, we've essentially surrendered. ISIS nearly got nuclear material a few weeks ago, Iran already has it, and we whine about someone using a word we don't like.

Let the military do what they have to do and keep the politicians from micromanaging. Their record has stunk since WW II in that area.

One of the reasons the French took their planes with bombs to the air this weekend was that they have no "rules of engagement" to prevent them from bombing inside the city that is the home of ISIS like we do. We are only allowed to bomb in the countryside to avoid collateral damage, so ISIS just moved their hqs and munitions inside the city. Fortunately, our engagement rules allow us to provide any friendly country will b**lls with the strategic info needed for success.

Anyone who thinks the Middle East would be Storybook Land today but for US efforts to take out Sadam and Gadaffi are mistaken. The Islamists have had a goal for a thousand years to rule the world and force everyone to live under Sharia Law. Peace in the Middle East is an oxymoron, has been for ever.

Collateral damage is a very unfortunate reality of any war.

Remember the carpet bombing in Ruen, Normandy? 15,000 French civilians were killed there. Horrific, but we defeated Nazis.

Many examples like this,but this war is much more difficult and the world let that happened, the enemy is everywhere and we have to do what we have to do.

Period.

There was a very interesting article in the NYT today...ISIS is in a box:

To the south, neither the Lebanese, who worry about the influx of Syrian refugees, nor the Jordanians, who are still reeling from the horrid execution of one of their pilots, nor the Palestinians have succumbed to any fascination for ISIS. Stalled in the Middle East, ISIS is rushing headlong into globalized terrorism.

In fact, they attacked Hezbollah in Beirut too a week or so ago!

They will implode.

We can't let fear overwhelm our good sense.

Here we are whining about red cups.....when WW3 is coming. I pray our leaders here get their act together and it doesn't take a tragedy here to wake them up. I hope all of us realize the events in Paris will have a global effect for many years to come . Say a prayer for us all

What I resent is the candidates using this tragedy to help their campaigns . The truth is they have no idea what they would do when faced with all of the facts, and the responsibility.
