I'm getting weary of so many people complaining about everything being too PC . I think

sometimes it's just an excuse and a cover up for not being a decent human being . You

can say something outrageous , racist or just really mean spirted, and somehow saying it's not PC makes it ok . It's not.

I agree. When some people talk about things being "too PC," it often accompanies some terrible talk about others. In my mind, I swap out PC for respect. When people say they're "not PC" and it makes some people mad, I always think they're not being respectful and that's what makes people mad.

I certainly agree that everyone deserves courtesy. However, I feel that respect should be earned and have taught my children and grands just that. I do think that Pollitical Correctness has gone entirely too far, and that it is causing more trouble than problems solved. Common sense should always prevail. Everything in moderation, please.

I am so glad to see a brave soul address this issue.

There are constant complaints here about life being "too PC" nowadays. Yes, I can understand that the brew-ha about the Starbucks coffee cups is plain silly (pardon my pun). And perhaps you could add saying "Happy Holiday" instead of "Merry Christmas" to this mix.

But somehow I get the feeling there's more to this complaint than this. Could it possibly include social norms of no disparaging names for people of certain nationalities or races, no crude jokes about certain groups, no disparaging remarks about gays, nothing disparaging about religious groups other than your own, etc., etc.??

Maybe to some, if a public figure does this, it's just "say it like it is." It's a throwback to the days when anything could be said. It might have been reluctantly tolerated back then, but those days are so long gone.

Give me "PC" any day of the week. Bet those complaining have never been hurt by being a victim of "non-PC."

Pam, you are making a very sad and erronious assumption when you say that "those complaining have never been hurt by being a victim of "non-PC". You could not know most of the people on this Board, and you cannot possibly have any idea what others have been through. Not all of us wear our hearts on our sleeves or chips on our shoulders. Never assume that anyone falls into a particular group unless they have confirmed it to you, and even then don't assume you really understand how they feel.

They may not and then they'll change again, but there's one thing they make clear: we will not put up with disrespect and we will speak up when you use derogatory terms to dehumanize us.

When the PC rules first started it was great for not insulting or name calling (never acceptable). These days it has gone to the extreme, no one can laugh at themselves at all and no one can say or joke about anything. It has gotten ridiculous.

PC can mask lies and mean behavior, also. Accusing people being mean and racist in the name of PC and allowing depraved, sick, harmful behavior is wrong. You don't know where people are coming from. And when is it unPC to criticize one famous person yet pc to criticize another of the same ethnic origin. (Dancing around what I want to say in PC terms for the moderator.)

I watch comedy movies and TV shows all the time and they're still making loads of hilarious jokes and telling really funny stories. I never made racist, sexist, homophobic jokes or jokes denigrating the disabled before, so this hasn't really stopped me from joking about anything at all.

Which jokes have the PC rules stopped you from making?

It's not, as long as the thing you are criticizing the person for isn't anything to do with said ethnic origin or because of a stereotype.

I am sorry if I offended you. Yes, I was making an assumption based on intuition, not based on fact, My intuition tells me that if someone has been personally offended by a non-PC comment, or has ever endured more, they would be the type of people most sensitive to not offending others. Obviously, you disagree and have stated it a bit harshly.

As far as saying "Not all of us wear our hearts on our sleeves and chips on our shoulders" - Well, I confess to wearing my heart of my sleeve. I'm happy with that. I've also been called a "bleeding heart" more than once, and I consider it a compliment. But the "chips on our shoulders" confounds me. It really does. We can all have strong opinions. OK. No assumptions. If someone confirms what group they fall into (your language), I would want to understand how they feel.

The term originated from The Black Woman: An Anthology. Toni Cade Bambara wrote that "a man cannot be politically correct and a chauvinist, too." The term was used ironically, even humorously, but the underlying idea was taken seriously. Today the words (along with the acronym) are used as a slur. It's often mocking those who believe in treating people inclusively, with mutual respect and dignity. There's a twisting of the original use by certain groups who try to equate it to weakness when that could not be further from the true meaning.

It's absurd how so many people are so offended. All these little walking cupcakes who lack the confidence to deal with life. Ridiculous. Used to be that I just eliminated people from my life that I had to walk on eggshells to be around. I never imagined those annoying people would go off and multiply in such great numbers!
