Learned Something New!

My daughter is in Las Vegas to run in a race this weekend. She sends me Text pictures and messages all of the time.

She normally lives in Denver where the air is crisp and clean. She skiis every weekend, etc.

She said, "Mom, you would hate it here. People are smoking everywhere!"

I'm surprised. I didn't think there were many places where you could still smoke inside.

I guess the cigarette industry must love Las Vegas. Ha!

Yeah, casinos do all they can to keep you happy and spending. Vegas also has a lot of international guests. Luckily they really pump in the O2 and filter like crazy.

Yes, it is really bad. It doesn't seem it will change soon. The casinos will allow just about everything they can get away with for a buck.

Yes, it's still a smoker's paradise in So Nevada....have no idea about Reno. Some hotel/casinos are more sophisticated than others in providing state of the art filtration and special ashtrays that capture the smoke. But, most casinos couldn't care less about any of that.....they just want you to gamble and lose....should you one day drop dead from lung cancer....not their concern.

Also, a carton of cigarettes is very expensive here now...around $60 at least.

@foundinlvI'm not a smoker, but I think $60/carton sounds cheap.

As for the smoking in the casinos in Vegas - they do a better job of filtration and providing smoke-free areas than any other casinos I've ever been in -- or was that just in the casinos I visited last year. We entered at least 5 or 6 of them and I don't remember smoke being an issue in spite of my almost always scratchy throat.

I suspect lots of their international patrons are annoyed by the restrictions because I'm always annoyed by the lack of them when I go abroad.

I'm not a smoker either but there are 10 packs in a carton, so yes, $60 is a lot, at least out here. I hear lots of smokers griping about it.

We've been in a lot of casinos in lots of different states and they ALL allow smoking. They have smoke free areas in some of them, but not all.

Those states include LA, KS, Colorado, Mississippi, NV, Missouri & New Jersey.

I don't smoke either, but if someone is smoking next to me I just get up and leave.

We have 4 local casinos here in Kansas and they all have smoking. No smoking in their resturants though.

Oh yeah, casinos everywhere are typically very smoke friendly. We go to Mohegan Sun and Foxwoods in CT often to see shows, and we always come out with a giant plume of smoke behind us and smelling like ashtrays for days. I don't hate on smokers (because I love a few dearly!), but yeah... it ain't pretty. My poor hair!

As long as you avoid the casinos you'll be ok. We don't have smoking in offices, stores, restaurants, bars, etc. There was just no way they could put casinos in there (lot of money to fight that!).

I haven't been in one for years. I have asthma so it was a pretty harsh environment for people like me.

I thought it was just NV. Thanks for the info. It's hard to just get up and leave if one goes into a casino with the intention of gambling and is having a good run.

Here the smoke in some of the casinos is so thick you could cut it with a knife. The reason is they're on Indian land and not subject to state or local ordinances. They pretty much do as they wish, so I pretty much stay away from them.

they have non-smoking areas in casinos which is where i head when i'm going to a casino here in ca. my problem is the smoker on the street because i have asthma, too. and the smell! good golly, how can they stand it?

Harrahs is not an indian casino and they have them everywhere!

All four of ours locally are indian casinos. They are not smoke free but one of them is alcohol free.

they tax cigarettes and booze a lot in maryland.......so they are around $65 a carton, but much less in delaware. my s/o smokes and he has said it doesnt matter to a smoker how much you charge because they will ALWAYS buy at any price.

That's unbelievable. I quit smoking in 1985, because I thought they were too expensive at $9.90 a carton. I started when I was in the USAF

and they were $1.50 a carton.

Oh man I need to move there. $60 for a carton?! Here in NY they are $100 which is the only reason I quit.
