Do you still tip when going to someones house for a servive?

My hairdresser comes to my house but refuses to accept a tip so I take care of her at the holidays.

Unless she has all the licenses & health permits to conduct her hairdressing business out of her home, doing 'side jobs' like this always catches up with them.

My answer would be 'yes', tip her.

It'll be some cash to tide her over when the salon finds out & they'll fire her...or worse case, the city finds out she's breaking all sorts of code & fines start to mount.

Everyone has a close bond w/ their hairstylist...I do, too. But never in a million years would I go over to Richard's house to get my hair styled/colored. No matter how good of a job, it's illegal & that's something I don't want to be a part of.

my hairdresser is in her home and yes, I have always tipped but felt it was ridiculous She should have her prices built in without tip. Yes she is using her water and electricity, build that in your price.

Personally I wouldn't go to her house, that's just me. My stylist is the owner of the salon and one of her other stylists can do my hair if mine isn't available. If I am correct, she can be fired if that salon finds out she's doing hair at home.. maybe a health reason but still..

Yes, If she has a business license at her home. Does the salon allow her to do this? If she rents her station she can do this, instead of a chain. There's a few home salons here. (one chair)

I have never been to that type of shop but if I did; I would tip. Of course. The hairdresser is still providing the servive. I know some here do not tip shop owners but I do. If they are doing my hair I don't think it's fair to cheat them out of tip.

If she is doing the same services as in the salon, tip her if you want to.

It is illegal and against the law to do hair in your home for money, so she isn't supposed to charge you at all. All hair must be done in a licensed inspected salon. She could be fined for this. The salon and the hairdresser must have a state license that is visible to the public upon entering,

She and anyone else can do hair in their own home if they do not charge for their services.

I also cannot help wondering what the real reason is for her wanting to do your hair at home and not at the salon.

Are you friends? Is she doing it to make it more convenient for you?

Is she just trying to get customers away from the salon so that she doesn't have to pay them a percentage? If she is doing that, it's unethical and I'd probably pass on the whole deal with her.

If you and she are good friends and it's based on that, it's a different thing. But since it was she who is trying to get you to come to her house instead of the salon, and you were not friends before this, then it's kind of hinky, IMO.

Oh, so as to the tip - if she is being dishonest, trying to get customers away from the salon to rip them off - well, I don't think it would be a matter of a tip because I'm not buying. If you were previously friends and it's a convenience for her I probably would tip her. But if she were a friend she would probably not accept tips anyway.

You are paying her to color your hair, right? Unless she goes above and beyond coloring your hair, then no tip is required. The money you pay is going 100% to her, not a salon owner, so that would just be wasted money for you in the form of a tip.

Tipping has gotten so out of hand.

It sounds like she is trying to steal customers from the salon to start up a business at home. Not nice .
