Nordstrom's Announcement

Nordstrom has announced that it will not display Christmas decorations in its stores until after Thanksgiving. The reason cited is they want to celebrate one holiday at a time. And of course they will be closed on Thanksgiving day.

I agree with their policy, and think more retailers should adopt it. How do you feel about it?

just a fyi......they are technically NOT closed on thanksgiving. they DO ask for paid volunteer employees to come in at 8pm the night before thanksgiving and work through the night to set up all of the christmas displays.....usually until four or five in the morning.

i think it would have been better for them to begin the decorating a little early.

Black Out their websites on Thanksgiving?

I love Nordstroms and support their decision. I wish that other stores would follow them,

but I'm not holding my breath. When Christmas trees are next to Halloween candy, all is lost.

They are all fighting for our dollars, so soon I fear some stores will be open on Christmas.

Makes no difference to me....people make too much out of this Holiday thing. I would rather just not have any of it period. Cancel Holidays.

nordstrom has always had this policy and i applaud them for it. one of the many reasons it's my favorite place to shop.

I think for this day and age it is an outmoded policy to wait until after Thanksgiving. LOTS of us do not "do" Thanksgiving. If you work, you don't have enough time in three weeks to enjoy Christmas if you celebrate that. To me, why not put up the Christmas/Holiday decorations a week before Thanksgiving and kick off the party--for whatever you celebrate!

Lights, cameras, action! Thanksgiving is a big meal, if anything--so let's start the real party early! To me, Halloween is the Fall celebration and then "Christmas' starts Thanksgiving week anyway now.

I had a friend that worked at Nordstrom a few years ago and he said they were expected to work on Thanksgiving to decorate the store, and it really wasn't a choice......

I think they should close early on the day before Thanksgiving and have the employees decorate the store then.

When I worked for a bank in the 70's, we went home at 3:30 every day. The tellers stayed till 6 pm on Fridays. Now some banks are open 7 days a week.

And you can reach someone on the 800 number on Christmas day or the stroke of midnight new years eve.

I worked for an insurance company in the 80's and the president's dream was to be open 7 days a week with phone coverage 24 hours a day. Unheard of! But it happened.

I'm not surprised stores want to be open. I can't believe movie theaters have been open on holidays. I just found this out a few years ago. Last place I would want to be on a holiday.

Nordie's is smart to set their company apart, as there is so much competition among these high end stores. I never go anywhere near a store after Oct. 15--to me crowded shops are not festive, just chaotic.

I mainly shop their sale websites (Nordstrom's own perpetual sale and also Nordstrom Rack online) and their sales will reduce items to much lower price points than their competitors. So it's the first place I look if I need something expensive--the sale area on the Nordie's sites.

Yayyyyyyyyy for Nordstrom! This pleases me greatly. It saddens me that the traditions and true meaning of Thanksgiving seem to be slipping away. So many people today have no respect for such a great and important American holiday. Hopefully, other retailers will follow. Americans tend to follow the lead that retailers set.

.....it sounds like you don't know the significance of Thanksgiving. That's sad. It isn't about eating turkey and pie and hitting the malls.

Not everybody celebrates Thanksgiving or x-mas.

Not everybody has family to put on a big spread for, or a place to go to.

So, why not go to a movie, or restaurant, or *gasp* shopping.

Also, the brick & mortar stores are also competing with on-line retailers for your money. And the on-line retailers are open 24/7.

And yes, sooner, rather than later, stores will be open on x-mas.

And I am okay with that.

Thanksgiving has little meaning for lots of us. Doesn't mean we aren't thankful. If you don't have a big family, or a lot of family near, it makes a difference. I don't see it as anything really different than fourth of July. It's not a religious experience for us, or for a lot of other people.

It used to be a fun day and a big meal with family, and we said thanks, but seriously wasn't that big a deal.
