I was going to post this pic on a thread when it was closed. When I lived on my acreage in 2012, my 12-year-old Golden was outside jumping up and down making noises like a puppy. When I went out to investigate, I found this little guy. Brought him inside and called Game Fish and Parks. They promptly informed me that I should put the Bambi right back where I found it, that it's mother would be back for it. Which I did, although a little uncomfortably. They said that baby deer are safe from predators for about two weeks as nature makes them scent-free. Fortunately, when I was mowing the lawn a week or so later, I saw a mom deer and baby, and convinced myself it was this one. Isn't he/she just the most beautiful creature???

What a cutie. I honestly don't know if there is anything cuter than a baby deer. Maybe a baby pig, a baby goat, a baby calf, a baby horse..... All babies are cute.

So cute this baby deer is! I see them all the time around my neighborhood with their mamas. They are fast runners. It is true their mama will come for them if they are hurt. One baby got hurt last year at our neighbors and mama deer put her on her back and carried her away. We didn't touch her.

Yes, just beautiful. I see them regularly around here, some only a few hours old they can barely walk. They are amazing to watch, especially when learning skills from mama. When they are very young, like in the picture you posted, they often hunker down in grass while mama goes about doing her thing. They generally remain super quiet to avoid predators but will make this little "meh" sound to call for mama when it starts to get hungry or just to call her in. Mom will come running when she hears that sound but if humans and dogs are around, they will keep their distance until the area is clear. On some instances if she feels her baby is in dire jeopardy, she will come charging in and try to fend off whatever the threat is.

I know you meant well but please leave babies alone unless you know, without a doubt, that the mother has been killed or abandoned the baby. Usually the baby will hang around if mama never comes back in several hours and then, at that point, call your local wildlife animal rescue which will assess the situation. I don't trust fish and game as they often will just kill the fawn or just let it die naturally and not come pick it up.

I did take HappyDaze's post to heart, and what I did with Bambi was done from lack of knowledge and innocence, but GFP explained it very well to me. I was just happy that my Golden didn't attack it or a fox or coyote think it would make a tasty dinner. I had been on the acreage 14 years and never seen a Bambi so up close and personal on my lawn.

@GingerPeach thank you, that was a kind thing to say. I have no doubt OP meant well- as most people do when they think an animal is injured or abandoned- but I just wanted to give some info for others who may come across a young animal and whose first instinct is to take them home. Best bet is to contact a wildlife rescue facility and ask what they should do if one is not sure.

@MaggieMack you'd be amazed at how many have actually been around very near to you, and you haven't even known they were there. Many times deer will leave their young near humans that have never been a threat to them. They instinctually know that they are less likely to be predated upon because coyotes, mountain lions, and othe predators tend to stay away from human areas, especially if dogs are present. Just an interesting tidbit.

I am not faulting you in any way. When I say "everyone," I mean anyone who happens to read this thread so they can become educated as well. HappyDaze knows a lot about animal welfare. So, no, that sentence was in no way directed at you.

@MaggieMack How cute! I used live on a very wooded area. I was walking through the woods and I almost stepped on Bambi (just like your picture. I slowly backed off, and left the area. I went back to check and Bambi was gone 1/2 hour later....Mama must have moved her. I was worried too... as the area was full of coyotes.

Love yours too... I've had several Golden Retrievers. They are the best dogs on the planet. I now have downsized to cocker spaniels...still miss my golden's though.

OOPS.. I just realized maybe you don't have Goldens... lol! I love your dog and avatar either way.

we have a lot of deer around our area....white tail......it used to be VERY wooded area, now it is much less, but the deer have stayed around the area. sometimes they are in groups of 6 or 8. it is rutting season right now. they are beautiful to watch. yesterday there were two eating the leaves off of a bush in the backyard.

@sunshine45 ... That is what I miss the most. We lived in a area that looked like forest preserve. Wildlife were our closet neighbors. I loved it in the Spring & Fall ... when you see the most activity.
