Did you ever have a dream you can' shake off ?

I woke up really early this AM. and did manage to get back to sleep. I wish that I didn't

because I had a really disturbing dream . I usually don't remember my dreams , but this

has been hanging like a dark cloud all day. I know it won't last , but it's strange.

Oh, I could write a book!

One weird nightmare I had Saturday night was that I was going to be executed. My memory is vague on it but all I remember was that I didn't kill anybody, I lied about something, and I was waiting and waiting - like, do it already. Then I woke up.

I've had every kind of nightmare there is - a zillion of them over my lifetime, but I have to say that was a first.

I always dream that my car has been stolen. (I actually DID have a car stolen some years ago.)

Oh my, I've had that dream so many times. For me, it's always that I have gone somewhere, where I had to park in some large or large-ish public lot and when I come out I cannot find it. I keep looking and looking and looking and never find it. I've never had one stolen and, from having that dream so much I sure hope I never do! Sorry it happened to you, though.

I frequently have vivid, active dreams. Strangely, they usually occur just as you said, I wake up, then when I go back to sleep I have one of "those" dreams.

Wonder if the brain gets bored wakes us up, then creates dreams to amuse it's self while we go back to sleep?

Now, I'm the queen of nightmares so I could probably be in some sort of study of slightly abnormal psychology. But has anybody ever had a nightmare (or I suppose ANY type of dream) and woke up. Then, when you go back to sleep the dream continues on?

I've had this happen and, in the case of the bad dreams, I have to make a point of lying there for a while, going through the dream and then PAST it, before I can go back to sleep because I just don't want to find myself in that dream again/still. (sorry - run on sentence)

When I was little I used to have this dream alot. I would be on the playground out for recess and I would look down and there would be money.....a nickel, a dime, a quarter. I kept finding it in the gravel and I could hardly hold it all. THEN the bell would ring to go inside, but I could still see money and I didn't want to go in, but I did. Not really a nightmare, but a strange dream that I had several times as a child.

My sister, on the other hand, had the same dream, but she always found pencil erasers. Try to analyze that one. LOL

@chickenbutt Yes, but it is usually a good dream. If it is a bad dream, I do the same as you.....lay there and try to think of something good. Have you ever woke up screaming/yelling, but once you are awake, it is really more like a gutteral sound?? Awful feeling....

Tends - Yup, I've had that same thing with the gutteral sound. I can totally relate!

The 'dreams' that have really stuck with me the most (can you tell - I LOVE talking about dreams. They are so fascinating) were the ones that I think might be called 'night terrors'.

These are dreams that have no actual content. It's just this profound sense of terror. You are so terrified that it's insane - yet there is nothing visual in the dream that is terrifying you.

Then - you wake up and it's like 'whew, glad that's over'. Then BAM - you weren't awake after all and it hits. It cycles through that 3 or 4 times for me before I actually wake up. Of all the scary dreams I've had since I was a little kid and through my adulthood too, that one is the scariest. I haven't been able to figure that one out.

A lot of my nightmares I can figure, from my many years of psychology, what they are about. But that one is a mystery to me. I haven't had it lately - probably for almost a year - and I continue to hope that I don't have it again!

I've had great 'flying' dreams that stuck with me because they were pleasant. I could fly and it was kind of like the Flying Nun flying. Very relaxing and easy - going higher and lower, turning, then gently back to the ground. Awesome!

Unfortunately, most of mine are bad dreams but some of them are kind of interesting - to me, anyway.

Tends - I just thought of something about the 'screaming' thing.

Some of my nightmares have been such that I would be trying to scream but I could never get a scream out. It was just a little peep and I would try and try to scream - but nothing.

I think that's kind of like the 'running from something that scares you' dream. You keep trying to run but you're barely moving.

(Ha! Can you tell what a tortured soul I am already?) hehe -

My mother and I were very close, she died years ago, too young.

I often dream that I go somewhere and discover she and my father are living elsewhere and I didn't know it. In the dream itself I get so upset that I've missed all those years with her. So upset, I wake up and still feel that way.

It can upset me all day, so I know what others here mean.

Yes... I would dream I was driving, in my car, up a steep hill and when I would get to the top I would feel like I was falling back down...I just could not get over the hill...it was quite scary....I have not had that one for a while.

Usually I don't remember my dreams but sometimes I wake up in the middle of the night and know that I have had a dream because I feel a bit scared or unsettled.

In 2014, I had lung surgery and was given Dilaudid for pain postsurgery.

During that time, I suffered from delusions and and horrible nightmares. My family worried about my taking the drug until my surgeon explained how serious the surgery and the resulting pain was.

I still occasionally suffer from bizarre nightmares. Like others have noted, they mostly occur after I awaken from my nightly pitstop. Somehow, I always feel that these bad dreams mirror my Dilaudid experiences.

The dreams I can't shake off are always the ones where I hear the voices of family members who have passed, call my name. Every single time it's happened, there has been a health issue with someone in my family, so I take it as a warning.

@chickenbutt I've had the flying dreams, too . They are wonderful. In mine, I run and run and then push off. If I get close to the ground, I just push off again. I'm never that high in the air, perhaps tree top height.

@chickenbutt Yes, the inability to run or scream in a dream......it is like a paralysis has come over you. Even after you wake up, you can't scream and you're too scared to move for a minute or two. Maybe we are all a little be tortured, hehe, wink.

Yes! Just last week I had them two early mornings in a row & the first one was one of those trying to scream things. My late mother was in both dreams. Funny thing about that is that since she died I've never had a dream about her, but there have been a few that she was in. Don't know what that means & don't really want to know.

I worry about those yelling dreams in particular because I live in an apartment & am afraid if I'm loud a neighbor might wake up & call the police. I heard there's a cell phone app you can get that records any sleeptalking you do, so I might look into that to find out how much noise I make when I'm sleeping.

I can usually explain my nightmares, & night terrors, away as being caused by some anxiety in my life at the time.

@NoelSeven I have dreams where my parents are alive and it is all just natural/normal. I don't run up to them and ask them why are they here or what happened. When I have those type dreams, it is as if I have spent a beautiful time with them and I feel good and somehow, fulfilled for the whole day.

I am sorry yours are upsetting dreams.

Oh yes, I can sympathize! When you have one of those dreams, it can stay with you all day. It's just this distant feeling that something isn't quite right and that you're a little "off." It can be very disturbing. I have recurring dreams of planes crashing. Over and over, this has been going on for years. And it's terrifying! I wake up in a full blown panic attack. I'm never on the plane; I'm always witnessing the crash... trying to get out of the way... find my family in the chaos... hysterical that I just witnessed hundreds of people's demise. yeesh

Just once I'd like to dream of kittens and cupcakes like some other people........... and, while we're at it, a circa 1969 Robert Redford (in full Sundance attire) whisking me away on the back of his horse to a land far, far away. Or... a circa 1989 Don Johnson in a Testarossa. Hey, I'm not gonna be choosy!
