If you think that this season of "Project Runway" has been a little bit of a letdown, you're not alone: Beloved mentor Tim Gunn completely agrees, going so far as to say he "hated" it.

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Gunn sounded off on the show's about-to-wrap season, telling the site, "I hated season 14."

He continued, "I felt that other than a couple of designers, they weren't working up to their potential. The whole thing was lackluster."

Those are strong words from Gunn, who typically takes a gentle approach with contestants, guiding them to smarter design choices through frank but sensitive critiques and tough-but-sensitive love.

But apparently that love just wasn't enough this time around, and Gunn said that had a lot to do with the contestants themselves, who he says "just weren't hungry" enough for the show.

"Their audition videos from home, you know, they're sitting by a pool, they're taking us into their closet with all their designer clothes, and I just thought, they're not hungry!," Gunn told EW. " ... And I think that was largely the issue."

One contestant in particular that we know Gunn is talking about is Swapnil Shinde, who Tim famously chewed out in one of the few times he ever lost his cool in "Project Runway" history. Another is designer Gabrielle Arruda (who was eliminated fairly early on), who showed off her lavish clothing collection during her audition.

Here's hoping that next season's crop of contestants steps up its game. Having Tim Gunn disappointed in you is one of the worst fates we can imagine for a designer."

Season 14 of Project Runway comes to a close on Thursday, and at least one person is thrilled to say goodbye.

“I’m telling you — and I haven’t said this very much — I hated season 14,” Tim Gunn tells EW. “I hated it. I felt that other than a couple of designers, they weren’t working up to their potential. The whole thing was lackluster.”

After 14 seasons, Gunn has become the face of the series — even more so than host Heidi Klum — and is beloved by fans for his frank but kind delivery of critiques. He’s known for having a warm relationship with contestants, but admits that this season is the first time he’s felt less than impressed.

“I have a theory about it, which is that they just weren’t hungry,” he says. “Their audition videos from home, you know, they’re sitting by a pool, they’re taking us into their closet with all their designer clothes, and I just thought, they’re not hungry!

Most of them. And I think that was largely the issue. I wasn’t at the auditions [this] season for the first time ever, and I blame myself, because I wouldn’t have put up with a lot of it.”

In addition to the contestants, Gunn would have also liked to see the judges step up their game — an air of competition has developed between them, he says, and it impacted their ability to offer valuable feedback this cycle.

“One says it’s black, the other says it’s white, and they don’t really listen and they don’t really look,” he says. “It makes me so cross and p----- off, frankly.” Here’s hoping they can make it work in the finale."

I wish they would do away with the guest judges.

I don't know if they get a vote or not but they are only looking at that one garment and they don't know the past history of the designers.

I really admire him for being so outspoken about how lackluster the designs were.

I also really liked that he shared that, for the first time, he didn't take part on the auditions this year. From what he said, it sure sounded as though some of the contestants wouldn't have been part of this season's mix if Tim had had a say in it. And I respected that he took responsibility for what clearly resulted in less qualified contestants for this current season. -- It sure sounds like Tim will take part in judging the auditions for the upcoming season. Thank goodness!!

Hopefully, this will put the next season hopefuls on high alert. Produce or expect to hear about it from Tim Gunn.

I posted this a few days ago on last week's thread, but I thought I'd post it here as well...

I'm curious as to who everyone thinks will win (or maybe more accurately "not lose") this season?

Here's my best guess:

1) Edmund -- I think he is a sentimental favorite which should help him through. Although I haven't seen much of his collection, I think his basic level of good taste will see hin through (I hope!).

the runners up are all complete guesses because each of them has basic problems with their collection:

2) Ashley -- I'm not a fan of the Frida Kahlo headdresses and I wish she had not abandoned her lovely print fabrics in favor of the pretty but forgettable pastels. Her clothes seem fine, but I think that her main problem is going to be the garment fits. I suspect that because she is fitting plus size models of varying sizes (bust, waist, backside, hips, thighs, and arm width), that she will have many more fit issues to fix than the other designers will have. -- I hope that, as in past seasons, she will get a 24 hour PR partner to fix these issues. That help could determine how she does in the finale.

3) Candace -- When Tim visited Candace, he warned her that her collection was headed into over the top, drag queen territory and Candace decided not to factor his advice into toning down her collection. -- I think Candace should have listened, because I don't remember Tim ever having been that blunt before. -- The judges clearly agreed with Tim and I don't see how she can tone her collection down in the remaining time. I think this decision could cost her big time.

4) Kelly -- I'm soooo confused and really disappointed because, late in the game, I've become one of her fans. She's the only designer that has shown consistent, out-of-the-box creativity this season. -- Either Tim or one of the judges mentioned that they couldn't figure out where the $9,000, that she was given for this collection, had gone. The money has been spent and it doesn't look like a fashion runway collection. I'm really sad to say that I think she's sunk.

lol, I'm looking forward to tonight's episode out of a bit of curiousity but, mainly, becasue I just want this season over and done with.

Unless the guest judge is a part of the challenge

for a specific reason I think the guest judges aren't

a good idea.

I've enjoyed your's and everybody's posts this season!

Seems like I had to watch most of the episodes at the

last minute On Demand before the next show

and I've been also disappointed in the quality this year so

I'm glad to read what Tim said. Gives me hope the

next season might be better one.

The next Project Runway All Stars is in the works

plus the new Project Runway Junior is about to

premiere. Maybe those will be worth watching.😊

I don't know who I think will "not lose" lol.

I like Edmond though so I'll give him my vote.

Interesting that Tim didn't take part in the auditions this season, but I personally feel for the show to hold my interest they also have to choose designers with some personality. For the most part these designers were just as boring as their designs.

I also think that there has been a disconnect between Tim and the judges for awhile now. For Tim to guide these designers he has to be somewhat on the same page and there have been many times they are far apart. It happened again this season and last season he admitted he was totally lost with Sandhya. The judges consistently scored her in the top and that confused him (and me!) and he didn't have a clue how to guide her.

Anyway, I guess I would be okay with any of them winning except for Candace.

Well I just looked up the winner on Wikipedia. Because of the darn time change, the show here doesn't end until midnight. I'll stay up to watch the runway shows and skip all the faux drama of the judging.

I've watched Project Runway since the first season. I think some of the most talented designers were in season three(with Uli, Laura Bennet, Jeffrey) and Christian Siriano's season(with Rami, Jillian, Chris March). I was also a fan of Jay McCarroll and glad he won the first season. The show really jumped the shark when it went to Lifetime IMHO and has continued to go downhill. And yet I keep watching, lol.

I agree....Season 4 with Christian, Rami, Julian & Chris raised the bar SO incredibly high, every season after that has fallen short.

This season?

The bar is SO incredibly low, it was almost embarrassing. Everything looked like a Home Ec project. I like 2 episodes back when Christian was the judge...and said he "could've made that dress in 10 minutes." So true.

I'm waaayyyy late to the Project Runway party. This is actually the first season I watched it ~ mid-season I might add. I have to admit I'm really glad Ashley won. I thought her models looked beautiful. I hope she goes far and does great things.

no surprise for the winner. they kind of had to give it to Ashley. just curious to see her collections in the real world.

as much as Kelli annoyed me with some of her designs, she seems driven. hope she keeps designing. Edmond and Candace seem to have a following

one or two of the regular judges need to go. they need Kors to come back because he did not sugarcoat his evals and opinions and imo that made the designers step up to the plate

I just saw what I thought was the winning collection based on what Wikipedia said, but fortunately they had it wrong. They had initially said that Edmond was the winner and when I saw his collection I was horrified. The last two are coming up now.

Not only did i think this was the most boring season ever.... but i think the programs are much too long!! Two hours.... when half of the program is taken up with nonsense and commercials...ridiculous.

As for Ashley winning.... most of her see thru things i could not see a plus size woman wearing.... especially the bottoms...

I agree! I really enjoyed the early seasons. I recently bought dvd's of seasons 1-6 on ebay. I look forward to seeing those shows again.

The 90 minute shows are totally unnecessary. Two hours last night was really annoying with the million commercials and all the PR Junior promotion.
