His statement is way off the mark. The reality is that the "planet" will survive no matter what. It's the majority of the lifeforms on the planet that will not survive if we continue down the path we're currently on.

He said that at a shareholders' meeting in 2013 in reference to cutting carbon emissions.

What he didn't take into account - or didn't want to - (and @Drythe is completely correct in that his statement was self-serving) is that cutting carbon emissions directly improves human life (and the life of everything else on the planet) by creating a healthier environment.

The Earth will eventually take care of itself if we don't take care of it. We are like a virus on this planet and the Earth knows how to rid itself of the virus. The Earth will continue on long after we are gone.

Even if you vehemently disagree with this statement, unless you're Ed Begley, Jr., you're part of the problem and not a part of the solution.

Changing out your lightbulbs is one thing. But generating your own electricity (peddling a bicycle real fast?) to operate your computer would be a good start.

I don't want it to go down the tubes, that is the point. But if we continue the way we are, we will destroy ourselves. Earth will rid itself of us eventually. Plants will survive and, hopefully, animals. Look at Chernobyl- animal and plants are thriving in that area even though it is still radioactive but because there are no humans to muck it all up for them. There are studies showing that it is direct human influence (hunting, loss of habitat, etc) that is the biggest risk for animals and their survival, even more so than radioactive material! Pretty sad.

I haven't bought gas from any Exxon station since the Valdez oil spill. Exxon just ran away and left others to clean up their environmental disaster, while paying lip service to how they would "take responsibility". Disgusting how they were allowed to get away with it.

Their bottom line is greed, so this man's statement fits right in with that. Nothing has changed.

Humanity is just a speck....a fly on the wall....not important....in the scheme of things related to the Earth. We will die off. The Earth will survive. To think otherwise shows Man's huge ego...laughable. Man is only a troublesome Hemororroid....

The question was if we agree or disagree with a specific statement. The statement was taken out of context so I will need to read the speech where the statement was made in order to comment.

In regards to his position, well that would take the discussion "off topic", so I will not comment on that. If you would like to start another discussion about that I will be happy to respond there.
