Police charge 3 students with sending sexually explicit images

The Tredyffrin Township Police Department has filed multiple charges against three middle school students for allegedly creating and sending sexually explicit images.

BERWYN, Pa. (WPVI) --

The Tredyffrin Township Police Department has filed multiple charges against three middle school students for allegedly creating and sending sexually explicit images.

Police say the images included nudity and child pornography. The ages of those charged range from 11 to 15.

Some of the images consisted of pictures or videos of students who attended Valley Forge Middle School and Tredyffrin-Easttown Middle School, as well as photos retrieved from the internet, according to investigators.

Police say additional students are likely to be charged in the near future.

The charges stem from an investigation which began in April 2015 by Tredyffrin police.

In one case, what police describe as an intimate image of a sex act was taken off of the internet by a male student, then distributed and portrayed as being that of a female student to her classmates.

Police say this led to an assault at Tredyffrin-Easttown Middle School.

In another case, a student offered to sell an image of a classmate to another student.

Police say most of the photos were selfies taken by students in their own homes with the location services setting on their phones activated.

Authorities say with the location service setting on, this would allow for viewers of the images, including child predators, to locate the homes of the juveniles via data stored in the picture file.

The school district released the following statement Tuesday afternoon:

The T/E School District has been cooperating with a police investigation related to alleged misconduct by middle school students. We take these matters very seriously and follow up with procedures that promote safety for all students. The incident may also carry school-based discipline. As such, the District cannot comment on specific student discipline matters, as we must do all we can to preserve the privacy rights of all students.

The District has cooperated fully with law enforcement agencies throughout this investigation and will continue to do so. We join with the police and the entire community to emphasize responsible use of technology and to affirm the rights of all individuals to live and thrive in an environment free from harassment. This message is central to our mission and our daily work with students.

Social media again in the hands of those who really don't know what to do with it.

Here in So CA, over in Orange County, a MRS. Orange County queen, was arrested for child prn. She would sell it and it was her very own children who were in the works. The children were too young to know what was going on. How greedy and desperate is that? Get a real job lady - after you serve your time.

And yet another reason why the family computer - and the ONLY computer in the house needs to be in the main living area - never in a child's room. Parents should feel free to walk over behind their kids and look at what they are doing on the internet. if the kid doesn't like them doing that - there is probably a reason.

My guess is that all this happened with smart phones, not computers. Same capabilities and it seems every parent wants their six-year-old to have their own phone.

The home computer is almost obsolete. Kids are doing this on their phones.

Kids shouldn't have smart phones. A cell phone for communication, yes, but a smart phone, no. Also, how can we teach children to have respect for their own bodies and those of others when pornography is all over the Internet? I'll never understand how prostitution is illegal while pornography isn't. Aren't both scenarios about getting paid for s*x?

It's not just smartphones either. The Nintendo 3DS has a built in digital camera. Many homes have a digital camera too. If a kid wants to take a nude photo of themself to give to someone you'll be hard pressed to stop them. Tablets, laptops, video gaming consoles all come with cameras. And truth be told, nude photos aren't a modern problem. In the sixties/seventies Polaroid photos of nude students were often circulated. It's just gotten easier to do now.

I know families who make the kids leave their phones in a basket in the kitchen when they are at home. PARENTS have to take control over the time and content of their children's time on the internet - period. No excuses. Children are not mature enough to be allowed all access to the internet.

I'm sorry but when something like this happens - it is the PARENTS fault. One of these kids was only 11 for pete's sake. Parents HAVE TO be in control of their kids access. Maybe they should buy them less electronic devices.

these kids have no idea of boundaries and respect for their bodies, girls and boys. no boundaries. the parents are out and at work. then they come home and the kids go to their rooms. they can see porn on their phones 24/7

i doubt kids are bothered to use a standalone camera when they can just as easily use the one on their phone that makes videos too. how convenient..

This happened to an extent in the middle school attended by my nephews. I am not surprised that kids are sharing explicit pictures on their phones. I had to deal with it with an adult, at work.

I wonder if any of the kids involved in this incident will have to register as a sex offender.

It's called s*xting.

It's so easy for kids to do, too.

They use their smartphones to take the picture.

If you take their phone away, they will use someone elses.

The pictures can be taken anywhere.

At home, a friend's home, etc.

Kids don't understand just how serious it is. Once you send a photo, it's out there......

That's what we need to do. We need to educate the dangers of s*xting, so that they won't do it in the first place.

It could have nothing to do with a tech device.

There have always been kids who feel like misfits, who desperately want to fit in. Some of those kids can be easily manipulated into doing something like posing for questionable photos. They just have to be told the cool kids are doing it and if they want to be cool, they can participate too.

We've recently had a rape case in the news where the older boy told a girl like that to come with him alone to a special Seniors event. He raped her there. She went along to a certain point with him because she wanted to be cool. When she said no, he ignored her.

The lack of self respect is scary. The thing is, if boy/girl doesn't send pics they will find someone who will, seems there are a wealth of kids willing to do so.
