On the subject of someone who just won't follow the rules....

We were swimming at the Y today and there was a guy there who at least appeared to not speak English - you are not allowed to mess with the sauna temperature but he was sneaking into the room where the sauna controls are and turning it up & up. The poor lifeguard was having a hard time with him. He had the sauna so hot a girl was burned on her bare foot when she stepped onto the floor. Then he was shaving in the hot tub, had it all full of his disgusting beard and soap. So now he had both the sauna and the hot tub shut down and a teen off to the ER. They kept telling him he had to leave but he just kept on saying he doesn't speak English. The lifeguard took him to the gate - pushed him out and locked the gate - he walked around the building and came back in through the locker rooms. The guard was so mad - the guy was mad and they are just standing there yelling in 2 different languages . Finally the police showed up, and had a man with them who appeared to be an interpreter. The police took him away.

Did you read about the airline guy who made similar trouble? It was on the news last night. This is now a common story, and sometimes it involves mental illness.

Which story is that Noel? I know the one about the Aer Lingus passenger who went nuts on a flight and later died he had coke in his system.

I'm sure this incident involved mental illness as well. When the guard pushed him out the gate then locked it - it was more than language barrier. That was clear in any language.

Just one of the reasons I don't use the hot tub in our town home complex. It is outdoors and open year long, as is the pool. A card is required to enter the area, but there's no card required to use the bathroom, changing room or showers. I used to walk my dog at 5 am every morning and I noticed a man there every day. There are places where the wall is low enough to climb. I assumed he was homeless, which turned out to be the case. My DH is the VP of the HOA and he and the HOA president had to confront the man and tell him he had to leave. We never saw him again, but both DH and I think about him often and wonder if there was a better way to deal with the situation.

OMG, i didn't hear that one

The guy in question is 26, went from passenger to passenger causing trouble and the captain finally decided enough was enough. I don't think it was the same one as the one having a fit about the reclining seat.

Sounds like a very sad story, where someone perhaps should've tried to find out if there was a way to help him, rather than just ordering him off the property.

Did anyone else see him at 5 a.m.? Was he causing a major problem sneaking in to have a shower? Sad.

Ditto on your comment like my Vietnamese nail tech who hardly "understands" what your telling her BUT try to include tip on a credit card -- her English is perfect "tips accepted in cash only!" Hmmmmm

(ps:she's been my nail tech for many years and been in this country since she was 10 -- she's 40! Long enough I think to understand our language😏)

I get that a lot where I work. Cust service in an insurance co. They call in and in clear English ask for an interpreter, just because they can.

Maybe the guy thought it was a Russian bathhouse. I don't go to any of those things there's just too much chlorine in them for me.

There was another lady at the pool who said she thought he was speaking Swedish - I have never heard of illegal aiens from sweden. Our area gets many tourists and we often have Europeans vacation or winter here.

Well said. It would be the same if we were traveling abroad to a country where we didn't speak the language. Would it be assumed we were there "illegally"?

As for some posts saying that certain people can speak "perfect English" some times - well, maybe they've perfected those phrases to help themselves navigate in a foreign country. Many Americans do that abroad.

I'm sure there are some who can speak and understand English and choose not to (for whatever reasons of their own). That doesn't mean all of them are trying to scam you.
