But what if EVERYBODY did that?!

I have a friend who thinks rules do not apply to her. For instance, we went to Costco together and she pulled her car up to the door to pack it. I pointed out the sign that prohibited it and she didn't care. The guard came to tell us to move and she told him she'd only be a minute.

We both got our MA at a local university when we were in our early 40s. She had her son do all of her computer class assignments for her. As a result, she had to ask me to help her with just about everything computer related the last few years.

Recently she had a psychologist write a letter saying that she needed a therapy dog to fly with her. This doctor was recommended by another friend. She met the doctor at a local diner where she gave her $50 and the doctor gave her the letter. She now flies with her dog sitting by her side. When the letter expired, she whited out the date and photocopied it.

When I call her out on these things she'll say, "What harm is there?"

Some of the things she does really upset me. Do you know anyone like this?

Happily, NO, I don't. I don't think I could consider someone that self-centered to be a "friend".

Some years ago, I had a friend who, over time, revealed that aspect of her character.

One day, as I drove away from a visit at her home, I said to myself "You're finished with her." I never called her again and she apparently knew without asking that we were done.

I'm quite sure she thinks she's better off without me, but I KNOW I'm better off without her. People who put themselves above the law are toxic.

The fact that you said "everybody" I will go out on a limb and assume you include yourself in that? Because I know I don't feel entitled nor do I believe I am "owed" anything.

Fortunately, I don't know anyone like her, but I see rude, entitled people like her everywhere, especially in the gym and in stores.

Not that I'm aware of and definitely no one I consider a friend.

My dad sometimes thinks that rules don't apply to him, but he'd never cheat on anything, pay a shady doctor, or falsify documents. He's more likely to get mad when someone tells him about a rule he thinks is silly or arbitrary and try to talk his way around it or get mad about it, but usually ends up following the rule he doesn't like because that's what you have to do.

I know someone whose daughter bought 'therapy dog' certification credentials online, just to take her Yorkie everywhere she goes.....literally everywhere.

He wears a diaper too.....poor dog.

Personally No, but see people like that fairly often, those that think the "rules" don't apply to them, it's really a sign of how society is these days, sad isn't it?

I do not know if I know anyone like that as I suspect they would not tell me. Sad, but the lifestyle of so many this day and time are not on a good level - in my opinion. I come from a military family, have lost members fighting for our freedoms but just do not believe anyone has the "freedom" to be a jerk and take advantage of things not intended.

No, I really don't know anyone like that, thank goodness...I'd be embarassed to be with them when they start demanding special priviledges. Your friend is a spoiled brat whose bad behavior has been enabled for far too long. You can't change what others choose to do about that but you can change your own behavior by saying NO the next time she asks for computer help or a special favor brought upon by her need to be catered to. Draw your own line in the sand and stand firm, refuse to acquiese to her need for special priviledges .

Don't allow her to continue to use your good nature, be a part of the solution and not the problem.

Whatever she does to them she would do to you if it served her purpose. She lacks integrity. People without integrity are not honest. With friends like this you don't need enemies!

Yes, I do know someone who used to be like that. I told her all the time she needed to get over herself; the real world didn't revolve around her. Long story short, she broke the law, got arrested, and has ultimately learned to get over herself.

One day at lunch hour I was out with a co-wrker and on our way back to the office she stopped at the post office - parked in a handicap spot and ran inside....said she would be just a minute. I was totally embarrassed to be left sitting in her car parked in a spot where she didn't belong....when I commented to her the fact she shouldn't have parked there - her reply was "I was only in there for a minute"....and I could see she was a bit put out that I even mentioned it...so yes....what if everyone did that??? That day, I lost a lot of respect I had for my co-worker.

I "had" a friend like that but I started distancing myself from her and her arrogance. That was a long time ago and I've forgotten most of what she did that embarrassed me but I still run into her occasionally.

Had a friend like her but I dropped her and told her why. She thought she was more clever and in charge. Don't miss her at all.
