I never do but I was in the supermarket yesterday. An elderly woman left her bag opened in the top part of the cart while her back was turned to it reaching for something. I couldn't help myself. I told her it was unsafe to leave her bag unattended and she should keep it on her. She told me I was right and thanked me. I just didn't want her to be taken advantage of.

I do when needed. I still remember the times when total strangers did the same for me and I'm very grateful. I've gone out of my way to help others. My FIL was shocked when I made my DH stop the car so I could run to tell a young lady that was crossing the street with a baby carriage that her money was falling out of her back pocket. I remember going through hard times when that 'pocket money' was all I had. She may have been in a similar situation.

As long as you are not rude and preachy, I find that it's appreciated.

I don't offer, but I did have a "gentleman" come up to ME in the grocery to tell me that the Diet Coke that I had in my cart was going to kill me, because it was made of the same thing that car coolant (or something) is. Then he pointed his finger at me & told me that it "obviously wasn't helping me lose weight, either".

I told him that it must have also given me Alzeheimer's, because I didn't remember asking for his opinion. Then I cried on the way home. :[

My approach is more about paying unsolicited compliments. I pay compliments to total strangers if they have a nice outfit on, an interesting piece of jewelry, their hair is perfect etc. Some people have tears in their eyes when they thank me, the thought that someone even notices brightens their day.

Then he pointed his finger at me & told me that it "obviously wasn't helping me lose weight, either".

I told him that it must have also given me Alzeheimer's, because I didn't remember asking for his opinion.

I don't think helping some one out is necessarily offering advice, but I do offer advice to young people even if they don't ask. I always say I'm giving them the benefit of my experience and to take it for what it's worth. No one has ever told me to mind my own business.

My sister's BIL is an oral surgeon so he is a smart man. He was in Costco shopping. He had his money in one place and credit cards in another. He was conned by a team working together. One was distracting him asking a question while the other stole from him. He paid with cash at Costco and didn't realize anything had happened. He got a call from one of the credit card companies asking if he made an expensive purchase, he didn't. The thieves got away with all his credit cards and driver's license. Moral of the story especially with the holidays coming be aware and alert of your surroundings.
