Dishwasher Odor

I'm having odor coming from my dishwasher. Of course the user manual didn't tell me what steps to take. Any suggestions? Someone said white vinegar. Could you use cider vinegar instead?

Do you have a self cleaning cycle in your washer?

Also, if the odor is one of burning, or electrical, DO NOT use it.

Can I use cider vinegar? Do I just sit a measuring cup with the vinegar in it and run a full cycle? Thanks so much for taking the time to respond!!!!

There is a dishwasher cleaner they sell. You just put the container in the dishwasher and run a cycle. I haven't done that in a long time - it needs to go on my list!

I know this is a stupid question, but why can't you use cider vinegar? I can't grocery shop right now (sick) and only have cider vinegar. Thanks again!!!

@DiAnne has given you the correct answer to your problem.....it comes from a build up of the dishwashing liquid that is used in these machines.......much like the odor from front load washing machines.......I happen to love distilled vinegar for cleaning, but not in this case.........you should be able to buy the cleaner just about anywhere...............raven

Cider vinegar will not cut thru the soap scum and buildup as efficiently as white vinegar. I always keep a gallon in my pantry, and another gallon in my laundry room to rinse all the soap out of our clothes in the rinse cycle. Routine use keeps down the buildup in the washer hose, so there is no odor.

Use white vinegar only and from here on out rinse your dirty dishes before loading them in the DW. That will prevent the odor.

Another reason for odors in dishwashers is the food strainer where residue food goes might have food on it. Take a damp paper towel to remove anything from that strainer. If you see any mold on the insides of the dishwasher near the sealer (rubber black or white sealer), take some diluted bleach and with the paper towel clean or spray that on those areas too.

I had it and it was driving me crazy. I tried the vinegar-nothing. I finally googled it. OMgosh, there were hundreds of people with the same problem. One girl referred to it as a cross between wet dog and pond scum. It was horrible. So one guy, bless his heart, mentioned the dishes, not the dishwasher being the cause. He said something about clay based on something they use in the manufacturing process. So I finally nailed it.It was the Corelle dishes I had bought not long ago. Stopped using them-no odor.

I don't think so! That is what a DW is for. No way I'm going to rinse dishes. If a DW works properly, no rinsing should be needed.

Mine gets dishes spotless with no rinsing. My DH doesn't have an odor either.

We do have a water softener, so that may make a difference.

Corelle dishes are a type of glass and they do not absorb odor nor do they smell like anything. I don't know what the cause of the odor was, but the dishes wasn't it. I would bet money on it.

I have used Corelle for a very long time. IMO they are the best dishes around!

Hard to break, cleans easy, lighweight, and stain resistant. I have never had ODOR problems with this brand. I also put bleach in my dishwasher from time to time.

I use Affresh tablets and they do a great job. I have a Kitchenaid dishwasher and this was in my samplle kit. It got rid of that odor. I found the tablets at BBB but I see them at other retailers.

One thing I've been told to always do is dry the door after putting dishes in the dishwasher. Water will accumulate from the rinsed dishes/silverware and when the door is shut that water goes into the bottom of the dishwasher-it starts to smell like a dirty fishtank.

To keep odors at bay, fill a small bowl with baking soda and keep it on the top rack of the dishwasher until it's time to run it.
