When a candidate runs for office and raises a lot of money - hundreds of thousands of dollars - then drops out of the race, where does the money go?

They can never raise enough money if you speak to one of them, it's probably already spent.

I know they can use it in another campaign if they plan to run again. I also understand that the funds can go to someone else's campaign.

Usually when they drop out it's because they ran out of money or additional funding.

I agree that the money's probably already spent. But it also seems like they can keep the 'fund' for another run, maybe (?).

I'd like to think that there is a more fair way that it has to go. I've never started such a fund, but I would imagine that there are VERY specific rules and guidelines.

Our Secretary of State had about $400,000 left in her campaign fund after she was elected. She was able to gamble a portion of it in the states' Indian casinos. Seems she has a major gambling addiction.

They can donate an unlimited amount to a charity or political party. They can also, within limits, make contributions directly to other candidates.

What candidates can’t do with leftover money is use it for personal expenses. (from here)

As for Dianna Duran, New Mexico's Secretary of State, she has been charged with fraud, embezzlement, money laundering and other crimes related to allegedly converting thousands of dollars in campaign contributions to her personal use in 2013 and 2014. (from here)

First of all she is no longer the Secretary of state - second she was not elected to anything ever. The rest of this statement is truely just a crock.

Dianna Duran is the current Secretary of State of New Mexico, a position she was elected to on November 2, 2010.

Prior to that she was elected to the New Mexico State Senate in 1992, and served from 1993-2011.

Prior to that she was elected as Otero County Clerk in 1988.

Ah, I see now, you thought Kachina624 was referring to a former U.S. Secretary of State. She was talking about the Secretary of State of New Mexico, who really is in very bad trouble at the moment.

She was referring to HER Secretary of State in New Mexico. That's what "OUR" means in her post.

Vcamp thank you I was under the impression she was referring to H. Clinton. Thanks for posting who the person is that gambled the money away.

clearly she was trying to infer it was HC. How on earth would we know where she lives etc.

Many of us here know that Kachina lives in NM & realized she was speaking about the NM Sec of State. I'm sure after the misunderstanding here about her statement, she will be more specific about such things in the future.

@151949, I understood @Kachina624 to mean the SoS of NM, never even gave HC a thought, based on the tag line she has been using as long as I've been posting. New Mexico/Land of Enchantment.
