Translated, it says:

"My friends and I love each other no matter our skin color."

That is indeed a wonderful picture, BUT, I am shaking my head over the ethnic stereotypes that even this little 5 year old is aware of -- the little Native American boy with a feather in his hair, and the little Asian girl with top knot and traditional dress.

I have to agree with you Peaches McFee. As someone with Native American heritage, I get very tired of the stereotypes. My favorite thing is when people ask why I left the reservation! I've never lived on a reservation, I don't have a doeskin dress with fringe, I don't do beadwork, I don't drink and I live in a very "typical" middle class america neighborhood and home with a very typical middle class america job.

Her sentiments are sweet but it shows how far we still have to go.....

Bingo! That's the first thing that I was too. Even at such a young age, with such a pure heart; she already thinks of people as stereotypes. She already puts people in "boxes". The words are sweet and lovely. The picture is somewhat heatr breaking....

Because showing traditional dress regardless at how basic or crude it may be is some how wrong? I highly doubt the artist meant anything disrespectful. Only an adult would need to look for something wrong with this.

I am blown away at the insight these little five year olds have. Truly wise way beyond their years. If the adults could only really hear what these little ones are saying to us what a wonderful world it would, could, and should be.

@chrystaltree I have to disagree as this is what she's been taught by adults which is too bad. These are the ways adults see others of ethnicities. That little 5 year old girl has nothing to base her pictures she draws, only ideas adults have planted in her mind.

@ Ms McPhee Honestly, Native American Indians did have feathers in their headdresses, Asians do wear typical kimonos still. So ideas and realities of these nature are not at all sterotypical.

I love Native American traditions, head dresses, and the love of their land, conservation. We used to have celebrations and traditional dances and costumes, prayers/chanting at our local park each year for many years. Not anymore. Such a proud display of a proud way of embracing and caring for the land, animals, nature, etc. We can all use more examples of these traditions.

Look, the sterotyping starts at the cradle, no one has to search too far to figure that one out. I'm surprised the teacher didn't catch that , it could have been a good lesson learned for the kids.
