Expecting a bad winter in Florida

One of my friend's daughter is in her senior year of college majoring in metorology (weather predicting). She was telling me we are going to have a winter similar to 2010 when it snowed a ton up north and was cool and rainy all winter in Florida. Florida needs the rain and some parts of the NE need water too so it will be welcomed even if it comes in the form of snow. Don't know that I'm looking forward to it being cool in Florida though, but I suppose we don't get to chose.

Oh yuck. One of these days me and my neighbor are going to have to join forces, bite the financial bullet and purchase some big time snow removal equipment. Living in the woods has some wonderful benefits, but a 750 foot driveway in the winter isn't one of them.

Believe me , we know that even if it is not totally nice in Fl. it is way better than up north. However, there isn't a lot to do in Florida when the weather is bad, because most activities count on it being nice out.

.....tell us what she thinks after she graduates; and is a real meterologist..lol. It snows "a ton" up north every year. It's called winter. It's an unusual year when we don't have a lot of snow. We talk about how weird and strange it is when we don't get a lot of snow. Of course last winter was one of those "once in lifetime" winters with snow amounts and frigid, arctic like cold that boggled the mind. I haven't heard from a legitimate source yet that we should expect a winter like that this year. But they can't always make predications like that. You take what they get. As for FL, sorry I can't think of a rainy or unusually cool winter as a big deal. When it comes to weather, FL has absolutely nothing to complain about. Except for hurricanes, which I think fall into the category of a natural disaster and not bad weather. Bad as they can be, hurricanes are events. They don't last for 5 months.

I take weather forecasts with a grain of salt. More than half the time meteorologists are wrong about what is going to happen tomorrow let alone knowing what will happen a few months from now. LOL

Looking at this on the " bright" side" .. keep in mind that with all of the extremely expensive equipment that they have to forecast the weather & all of the " highly educated" weather forecasters, they ( most of the time) can't accurately tell us what will happen tomorrow let alone what the weather will be like from November 15 through March 16 .... we all have to chill out & enjoy the beautiful weather we have now!!!!!!

I agree with you Lipstick Diva. but since I live in florida I love the cold weather because I get to wear the sweaters and jackets I bought from QVC that maybe get 6 wearing a year.

As far as snow, I have lived here 45 years and remember just a few dustings of snow not enough to make a ball.

Yes I saw this on weather.com We are suppose to have a wet winter with milder temps so ours will be in the form of rain some could be snow/ice. This is because of El Nino. Weather.com said this would be for the months Dec-Feb. They said they will know more in Nov. They said it's suppose to be warmer up North?

i only lived 'up north' (mid Atlantic) till I was 12-13. So I don't have those awful dreaded feelings about snow, ice and shoveling.

Anything below 74 degrees and I want to put a light jacket/hoodie on.

We did spend one winter (2010) in that area to be closer to our son's first child being born. It was snowy, icy, windy, but BEAUTIFUL. And so worth it!

I agree with Bookbabe. I would Love to have cooler weather here in FL. I also bought a few sweaters-which I Never do- and would like the chance to wear them. Bring On Cool Weather!!

If the meteorologists are as accurate in forecasting the winter weather as they were in forecasting hurricanes this year (NOT!), then I don't have a whole lot of faith in what they're predicting at this point in time.

She's a senior so she has some basis of knowledge at this point. And Boston had a very, very difficult winter, that was not the typical winter.

I have seen too many weather predictions way off base so who knows what we will get.

It's been my experience meteorologists do not do much better than the Farmer's Almanac when it comes to long range predictions.

Living in the Northeast, we hear either it's going to be snowier than normal, or there will be less snow than normal. It will be colder than normal, or it will be milder than normal.

The National Weather Service has been predicting a rough winter since the beginning of summer due to the extra strong El Niño in the Pacific. It will affect the entire country, even Florida.

There was a map showing how El Nino would affect the country. I'm in a very small part of the midwest that they said might be less cold and wet - hoping for that!

Well, they didn't predict the winter to end all winters for last year. And look what happened...lol Those of us who live in the north know the drill, you get what you get and you make the best of it. As for FL. There is no such thing as a rough winter in FL. Rough being snow storms, blizzards, ice storms, single digit and sub zero temps. Which is a wonderful thing because it gives us somewhere to escape to in the middle of our yucky weather..

Our weatherman just mentioned this last night on the news. El Nino is predicting in our state that winter will be slightly worse than last year. It wasn't that bad last winter so I am hopeful.

Really? So would you want a senior in medical school with the "basic" knowledge or surgery taking your appendix out...lol
