CALISTOGA & THE FIRE

Our family's favorite getaway. A small town past Napa in the heart of the wine country. Great wine country food, the best wine, and small places to stay. Right near the fire, people living in and near Calistoga have taken in displaced people and scout for the animals on the lose, taking them in also.

Residents have come together to feed everyone needing help, three meals a day, every day. Many of the displaced are setting up camp in the Calistoga Fair Grounds.

The local news showed a young Mexican-American couple who lost everything and had nowhere to go. The reporter told them our favorite little hotel was taking them in.

I am am so touched by the wonderful and generous people in Calistoga.

I am from Central California and feel so sorry for all those affected by the fires, just horrible. I have been to Calistoga and it is such a beautiful area. How great they are so willing to help those in need, a nice story for a change! Thanks for posting.

You are welcome. We just saw another report from one of our local reporters, Michael Finney, seen interviewing several older lady evacuees. He said he heard they were in a lot of pain from sleeping on cots, so Finney went to the two hardware stores in Calistoga and bought them out of mattresses.

I'm going to post a couple pf pix of Calistoga for people to see, it's such a beautiful little town.

I just read that there's been some looting in the evacuated areas. What the heck is WRONG with people???

It seems that always happens, which is why some people refuse to leave their homes during a disaster.

I love Calistoga. We use to go there a lot when I was a kid.

Over labor Day weekend we went to Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks. They are so beautiful. I am so hopeful they can save those beautiful trees.It would be a tragedy to lose them.

I'm really glad to find out there are other people here who are familiar with Calistoga. It's such a special place, and gives us such wonderful memories.

The entire area is special, St, Helena, the magnificent wineries, Yontville, it's all just so special. I'm so sorry that houses and land not far away have burned

We used to go to Calistoga for weekends when I was a child. Beautiful town, beautiful people.

Love the Bay Area So much accessible within driving distance-the coast, the mountains, fab city/San Francisco, Tahoe, Yosemite and of course wine country. Have visited Napa, Calistoga & Sonoma many many times-we LOVE the area & the diverse culture.

Saddened to read/watch the reports. Hope the fires are contained soon & no loss of life. It's still very devastating for those directly impacted. Please keep us posted @NoelSeven

Thank you for highlighting the goodness of Calistoga, and for the pictures as well.

I did not catch the news report of the hotel that took in the couple, so if it's the one I'm about to mention, it's just a coincidence.

I have been in Calistoga many times, both for day trips and overnight, and especially loved staying in the Mount View Hotel, where I was (years ago) introduced to a fabulous champagne-type, locally-produced sparkling wine, Schramsberg Blanc de Noirs, as part of a superb dinner.

I include this information to enourage anyone who might later have plans to visit the wine country, thereby supporting the local economy so it can continue to take care of its people and its neighbors.

Napa Valley and Sonoma too has been busy volunteering and donating. My sister is involved in helping getting Lost/Found pets back together with their displaced families. Many pets did not make it out alive. But many did. Some are still lost and missing of course. The good folks of the surrounding area have been searching for surviving pets and matching them up to frantic owners. It is a daunting but also rewarding task when they can say "REUNITED".

Our daughter tells people she almost grew up there, we were there so often. We often took a good friend's daughter up with us and the two of them ran free up there.

i'm glad you mentioned other parts of the area. We love it all, especially Sonoma. The people of Napa must still be in pain from their earthquake a year ago, how generous of them to offer help to others.

Your sister is wonderful to help with the animals.

All this destruction is just to emotional for me. On a spiritual level, I feel I know why it has come about but I don't like to accept what is given to me about these things.

Calistoga also know for the spa baths.. Before fire I go often. Live over the hill in SONOMA. Nape fairgrounds is where most are staying in tents. Too bad they can,t build Modular homes for those that lost theirs until they rebuild.

We do have beautiful country up here. I also feel like another poster something is happening in the world that w as foretold in bible.

Noel, I went to a school down on the peninsula that took several camping trips a year. One of our favorite places was in the Calistoga area. Learned to play " sardines " there. When we went as a family (over 50 yrs ago) we would each get to bring a friend. We stayed at what I believe was the old Calistoga Inn. The old white building.

Henny, is that the building on a corner? For those who don't know, the main street in Calistoga is two blocks long, lol. Actually, the street itself is longer, but that's the part that's considered the town.

Sardines was my favorite game, many long years ago

When we first went there we stayed at Doc Wilkinson's. Then friends told us about the Roman Spa and we've stayed there ever since. I love the old look of the 40s there. I kind of wanted to try one of the cabins at that resort at the end of town, the one with it's own geyser, but we always went back to the Roman Spa, it's like home. Got a unit with a kitchen so we could have breakfast and snacks in. I'm not a fan of eating out three times a day.
