I received a fraud altert email last night from Chase. I have an Amazon Visa card with them for about 8 years now and use this card all the time and never had an issue.

I've been using a card with a chip for about the last 6 months and yesterday someone was trying to use my card info at Staples. I thought the cards with the chips were supposed to be safer!

I'm just glad Chase declined the Staples charge. Then I checked my account on line and there was a pending charge for SQ or SD Home Designs I think it was. Whatever it is Chase said it's in Calif.

I'm getting a new card now but still need to continue to monitor the old card on line for a while since more charges could show up.

Arrgh!!!

I've been through this as well. I now have a Visa with the chip, however many places don't have the machines that take it yet. I check my online account almost daily now to be on the safe side.

I have been through this 3 times. The last time it happened I caught it right when it started. I had got online to look at something on my card statement & saw a few charges that I had no idea what they were. My card was cancelled & a new one issued. It's good to check you credit card accounts online several times a week plus keep tabs on your checking account. I check mine frequently.

Some years ago I applied for a credit card in my new married name.

Then we moved to another town, and I never heard from the credit card whether I qualified or not. I had a mail forward put in so I wasn't concerned.

Would you believe they sent the card in my old name to my old address. I had a mail forward put in, but since they put the card in my old name,it never got forwarded to me. Instead the mail carrier left it on top of a mailbox and someone got it and used it.

About 2 years later, I got a notice from some collection agency in the tune of over 6,000.00 in a town I was never in. The letter was addressed to my old name. I called them and told them that I never applied for a card in that name.

It took a year to clear my name. I told the collection agency to produce a signature of whovever used the card and they couldn't.

My credit score is 817 so everything is fine now.

I always say "thank you for asking" when a clerk asks to see my ID. On the back of my card, I've written "Ask to show ID" instead of my signature, but I've never had a clerk even look at that note, much less look at it and ask for my ID.

I use CC's 99% of the time on line only ....one designated card only. I never use them physically in stores. I do carry the one designated card with me just in case of an emergency...but it never leaves my wallet. I wrap it in foil. I see people who's wallets are stuffed full of credit cards! Why would anyone need that many with them everyday? I use cash for almost all of my daily local purchases. I think people are too addicted to credit cards...leads to trouble.

Credit Card info can be stolen even when the card never leaves your possession.

It's called skimming.

The bad guys will purchase a device that can read credit card info, hide it in like a backpack or someplace, walk past you, and as they walk past, the device will pick up your credit card information.

That's how most people get their cards stolen.

At the credit card factory, computers and machines make your credit card.

Another machine puts in in to the envelope, seals it, and batches of them go out in to the mail.

I've always wondered how the credit card companies know that it is not you making a purchase at a particular store, especially if you shop at various stores. How can they tell?
