WHEN VENDORS DESCRIBE SCENTS.....

i'm so amused-and confused-when vendors try to describe the scent of whatever it is they're trying to sell.....tonight I was listening to the lady selling her NEST fragrance....she was describing, and trying to convince me, to purchase her perfume that smelled like "dewey daffodils." I would probably have purchased the perfume if I knew exactly what "dewey daffodils" smelled like!!!!! I wonder how many of us have ever smelled a dewey daffodil........just sayin'.......

LOL. So true! Daffodils don't have much of a scent to begin with. So, a "dewy" one must smell like, ahhh..... water?!

I believe she mentioned the scent of dahlias, which I'm very familiar (with), and I haven't noticed any scent, so far. But, just to make sure, I'll be sniffing several varieties tomorrow!

Dewey dahlias were in the other bottle!!!

You're right OP. The other thing that I thought the other day, is that, because it smells great on one person, doesn't mean it will on me. I did make a purchase recently on someone else's say so and luckily I love the scents too. But, it doesn't mean those mixed on me, will smell the same as it is on someone else. So I don't think I'll do blind scent buying anymore. If I can't try it on myself, I may wait on that purchase.

You girls are right on target. I ordered one perfume once, and the scent was so bad I sent it back ASAP. So much better to check out scents in person, as this stuff is so, so expensive.

Everyone's sense of smell is so different, and individual body chemistry changes the final top note.

When I worked for a major cosmetics company, I also learned that the spices you routinely use in your foods also impact the final scent!

How anyone can buy a fragrance without smelling it just baffles me. The descriptions during the presentations really make me laugh. (Sorry, QVC)

I have many types of daffodils that have a wonderful fragrance, and if you haven't experienced this fragrance, buy some bulbs. They make fantastic cut flowers also, and come in many shapes, sizes, and colors.

I like to smell scents in person, put a light amount on my wrist, and wait until the next day to decide. Anyway, if the Q would send us requested samples of fragrances, there might be fewer returns. I'm sensitive to many fragrances, and prefer the natural types. But I have to try them, first. I can usually tell 'right away', whether or not a fragrance turns my tummy, and/or will give me an allergy induced headache.

I want to like them, but I know I won't. I have to smell a scent in person.

If I like it in person, I try it on and see how my body reacts to the scent.

I generally stay away from florals.

Even though QVC allows 4 weeks to return a item, I have a problem purchasing fragrances other than those I'm familiar with. It's true, frangrance often smells different on other people. My daughter was given a bottle of Joy perfume, which as we all know is extremely expensive. It smelled like perm solution on her. In my case most Estee Lauder fragrances smell like I've been drinking. One Christmas I received one of their perfumes and used it prior to going to church. The entire time we were in church, I kept thinking someone sitting nearby had been really celebrating. Then I found out it was coming from me!

I tried using an emoticon, but it didn't show up. Anyone else have this problem?

I'm an easy touch when it comes to fragrances. I've bought a few from QVC without smelling them, and I did very well.

Does anyone remember the fragrance "Diamonique?" It came in a beautiful bottle, and Kathy Levine described it as the fragrance of walking into an English garden, and the scent of a florist shop and smelling all the white flowers. Well, that did it for me. I bought the perfume and the eau d' parfum, and I loved them both. I actually still have some left and believe it or not, it still smells wonderful! (It also came with a Diamonique marquis shaped pendant with a chain).

I also bought Tova's signature fragrance without smelling it. It was and still is one of my favorite fragrances.

I bought Joan Rivers Now and Forever, and loved that one too. She also sold a set of a few (3 or 5?) bottles of floral fragrances, including lily and lilac.

These were all from blind demonstrations. I'm such a sucker for fragrances!

I bought Pheremone and a few other of Marilyn Miglin's fragrances from the other network. Again, loved them all.

The only time I ever purchased a fragrance, without ever trying it first, was when I ordered Tova years ago. Everybody described it as being wonderful. And, talked about how people stopped them on the street, and how their husbands loved it.

I used it several times. The scent made me gag. My husband asked me what I was wearing....because he didn't like it. And nobody stopped me on the street, lol.

The ONLY time Ihae ever hit a home run by someone helping me with a scent I have never smelled and tested on myself is when Philosophy "messed" with FIL. I loved that stuff. Many ladies here heled me with a very similar scent, Trish McEvoy's #9. I took a chance and ordered, and it worked out perffectly. Good thing cause that #9 is not cheap for me.
