Just read that the President is officially changing the name of Mt. McKinley in Alaska back to its original name, Denali, The Great One. At 20,320ft., it's the highest mountain in North America.

Seeing this mountain in person takes your breath away. It's so majestic. Ever since I first saw it, I thought it was deserving of its Indian name.

I lived in Alaska and have been to Denali many times. Some of my family members go to Alaska every few years. We visit the grave of our sister who died there and is in a cemetery in Fairbanks. Although that part of the trip is always sad, we love being in Alaska. There are people who refer to Denali as Mt. McKinley but it's not meant as an offence.

What a lovely thing!

I know locals always referred to the mt. as Denali, but I like that the "official" name has returned.

I must admit when I read the headline about the change I was afraid it might end up being mt. Kardashian or worse.

we have a closed covered over landfill near here, we call it Mt. Trashmore, maybe Mt. Kartrashion would be better.

I have taken a small airplane ride around Mt. McKinley, and yes it is beautiful. I have relatives that live in Anchorage. Not sure what compelled the President to make the name change. But then again, he does whatever he wants to.

I'm really happy about the name change, also! Denali is what the people native to that area called it.

I've collected quite a few pix of that area, it's magnificent.

The state of Alaska has had a standing request to change the name to "Denali" — a native Athabascan word meaning "the high one" — dating back to 1975, when the legislature passed a resolution and then-Gov. Jay Hammond appealed to the federal government.

But those efforts and legislation in Congress have been stymied by members of Ohio's congressional delegation. Even when Mount McKinley National Park was renamed Denali National Park in 1980, the federal government retained Mount McKinley as the name of the actual peak, which rises 20,320 feet above sea level.

"With our own sense of reverence for this place, we are officially renaming the mountain Denali in recognition of the traditions of Alaska Natives and the strong support of the people of Alaska," said Interior Secretary Sally Jewell.

The White House cited Jewell's authority to change the name, and Jewell issued a secretarial order officially changing it to Denali. The Interior Department said the U.S. Board on Geographic Names had been deferring to Congress since 1977, and cited a 1947 law that allows the Interior Department to change names unilaterally when the board fails to act "within a reasonable time." The board shares responsibility with the Interior Department for naming such landmarks.

In 1896, a prospector in the mountains of central Alaska named the range after McKinley upon learning that he had been nominated as a candidate for U.S. president.

McKinley became the country’s 25th president and was assassinated in 1901, six months into his second term. The 20,000-foot-tall peak had been previously known as Denali -- generally believed to be central to the Athabascan tribe's creation story and the site of significant cultural importance to many Alaska natives, according to the White House.

It is NOT his decision to make regarding name change! I believe that the people living in that state should vote on the name change. If they vote for the change so be it....he is not a king!!!

corita, Read my post #14, The state of Alaska has been asking for the name change back to 1975, 40 years ago.

One of the issues Senator Dan Sullivan campaigned on was returning the name to Denali. I'd say that was a yes.

Dell -- Thanks, I did and have been hearing all about it in the news. I still think it is NOT his decisoin. A vote by the people living in Alaska would be the most equitable and honorable way to handle it. That would stilll answer the Alaskans' request and maybe, cool the Ohioans' anger.
