This is my first time posting on this board, as I usually only post on the Beauty board. I have a pet-related question today, though, and was hoping to get some advice.

My dog Copper is constantly licking himself, mostly on his legs. The sound of it drives me and my daughter crazy! Plus, he gives himself these bloody "hot spots" from licking right through the skin. He always has at least one open wound from excessive licking.

I suspect that this is more of a habit for him than anything because he does it on all four of his legs and paws and does it in different areas. So I can't imagine that he is responding to a particular discomfort. Nerves should not be the issue because he has a very stable, easy life with no upheavals or big changes.

About him....Copper is 7 years old, and we adopted him at 8 weeks from the Humane Society. He is a huge, short-haired hound/lab/rottie mix, roughly 140 pounds and built like a small pony. He has always been healthy, thankfully. Copper is an indoor dog and spends most of the day on the couch. He is extremely sweet and gentle without an aggressive bone in his body (despite his very intimidating appearance), and he has never met a dog, cat or person that he didn't instantly like. He is our only dog, plus we have 6 cats.

Have any of you had a dog that just licks and licks for no apparent reason? What did you do about it? Thanks so much!
