A BIG "What If"

If someone gave you a scratch off lottery ticket inside a card, and you won *BIG*, say, over $5,000, would you share some of your winnings with the person who gave you the ticket?

Conversely, if you gave someone a ticket as a gift and they won *BIG*, would you expect a little something?

This is all a whole lot of useless wishful thinking I'm sure, but I received a few tickets and haven't scratched them yet. I could really use a nice, big WIN . . .

I think it's hard to say what somebody on the giftee end would do. But if I were the gifter I would consider it THEIR winnings, as the ticket was a gift to them.

I'm not the type to expect anything in return and I would rather they keep it and do something great with it. As far as someone giving me a winning ticket? It would really depend on the circumstances and my relationship with them.

I'm the type that would rather not accept something than have to play this whole dance of you bought me a drink so now I need to buy you one. I'd rather just buy my own in the end. When I give things, I do so freely and dont want anything back.

I would absolutely share if I won even $10. I'd probably spend it on taking them out to lunch.

I would only ever give my family and have lottery tickets and we've all said that if one person ever wins big, we all win.

When I give someone a gift, I don't expect them to share it with me. Now to contradict myself, if I was given lottery tickets as a gift and hit for a sizable amount, I probably would gift some of the winnings back to the person that gave it to me. Or treat them to something special. That is just the way I am.

No I wouild not share if the lotto ticket was a gift, however I have rec'd some very big tips from lotto tickets I have sold to customers. Last week I sold a $10K winner. The receipient was VERY generous, lol.

If I were the winner, I would definitely give some to the person who gave me the ticket.

If I were the giver of the ticket, I'd hope for a gift from the winner, but I would not really expect one.

If I won big I would more than happy to help someone that really needed some money like people that have run errands for me out of the goodness of their heart. If it was small they would get a nice gift.

As a recipient, "big" covers a lot of territory. $5-10,000 and I would take the giver out to dinner and thank them profusely, perhaps a little more. $100,000+ and yes, I would give them something of the winnings. You have to remember that whatever the face amount, you will really only get to keep roughly half before you give anything away.

As a giver, I would not "expect" anything in return, but for a huge win I would consider it a loving, appreciative gesture if I was gifted some of the money, a paid-for vacation, etc.

If I buy a person a sweater, do I expect to be able to share it with her? What about a candle? Do I get to take it home and burn it sometimes? No. If I buy someone else a gift, I don't expect to share it.

If I give someone a lottery scratch ticket, odds are I'm giving them 15 seconds of fun and $0, so it's really more of a gag gift, anyway. I suppose that if I won a few dollars, I'd buy my friend a coffee or lunch with a few more dollars. If I won $5,000, I'd probably still buy her lunch, but I wouldn't feel like I owed her any of the money. You don't tip someone for a gift.

Right, CB. The thing is, when you give a gift does it have conditions?

I think many of us may have been there (maybe with a mother in law??) where you receive a gift and, until the day one of you dies or you are divorced, there are constant conditions...if that person comes over you have to put out that awful clock (oops, that was one I dealt with) and it's always on your mind. It just goes deeper and deeper.

I cannot imagine giving a gift and having one iota of expectation to get something back from it.

Now would I wish I gave them the other lottery ticket? ha! You know that if you bought one to gift you probably bought another one, or more, for yourself. I can guarantee you I would be thinking - 'D'oh! Why didn't I give him/her the OTHER one?'. Sure thing. But it wouldn't go beyond that.

I honestly haven't even thought about what I'd do if I were the giftee because I tend to be massively unlucky. If you give me a lottery ticket it's pretty much a given that it will be a loser ticket. If I did win - sure i would feel like I might like to show my appreciation in some way. Absolutely.

I have done this a number of times with family members and my BFF and I always include scratch off lottery tickets in b-day cards to each other.

I would never accept money if they hit it big on a ticket I gave. It's a gift to them and I would hope they win. Conversely, I wouldn't give money to someone who bought me a ticket either.

Of course, this issue has never come up. LOL

Right off, I'd say no and no.

It would truly depend on the amount I won. If it were hundreds of thousands, better yet millions, I'd give my Sis some of it for sure. Might even buy her her dream home in a land that she loves.

If I gave someone a ticket that won no I would not expcet any of it from them. I'd be BUMMED that they won instead of me but I would not expect, ask, of tell them they OWE me something.

I've bought tickets at christmas time when 8 of us great close friends get together - scratch off tickets. None of us have even won anything on them but I gave them tickets because I like to do that. I would not expect anything of their winnings.

Probably not. There would be a lot of different circumstances that may change my opinion. I can't imagine strings attached to a gift.

Now if it was a good friend and they won, I'l laugh and tell them I gave them the wrong ticket.

My old boyfriend always used to play our birthdays in the lottery. One time he picked five numbers right. The only wrong one was one of my daughter's birthday. The thing is, the number that was picked was 16, her birthday was the 10th. However, her due date was the 16th. He came very close to being a millionaire. The pot had been in the very high seven figures and no one else had won.

He did get several thousand dollars for it though and, no, he did not share it.

Since we are talking about "what ifs"", what if you found a winning lottery ticket that was worth, say, $500 or more?

Would you keep it?

Would you turn it in?

Would you run an ad in the "lost & found" of your local paper?

I think if they won really, really big; like $100K, I would hope that they would do something nice for me. I would not ever expect them to split the money with me but I would hope they'd give me something. I say "hope". I wouldn't expect it, I wouldn't ask and I wouldn't resent it if they didn't give me something. But if we're talking about just a couple of thousand dollars; I wouldn't expect anything and I wouldn't accept anything even if they offered. A gift....is a gift. If I give someone a box of chocolates as a gift, I don't expect them to sit down and give me my share. If your worried about it and you happen (fingers crossed for you) win big, there is no law that says you have to tell anyone that won big....or that you won anything at all.

Thanks so much for everyone's thoughtful answers. It was fun to think of the "what ifs".

When it was all said and done I won a grand total of $10 and my friends who gave me the tickets in a birthday card were happy for me and told me to spend it on something fun.

Thinking about myself, I think that if I won over $1,000 I would be grateful enough to take that person out to lunch or something like that even though they would no doubt not expect anything in return.

Many years ago I won $150 in the office football pool and treated everyone to a pizza lunch. It was a small office and I think it was maybe 2-3 pizzas.

I know I'm not answering your question, but I'd never buy a lottery ticket. If someone gave me one, I wouldn't even think to check the numbers to see if I'd won. Just not interested.
