What have you read as one way when it was really another?

For example, I might be reading an article about miners and their troubles and all of a sudden see a sentence that reads,

"The red wine was delicious," when in fact the real words were "The lead miner was delirious."

And, mind you, the article was actually about mining. And nobody had had a glass of wine, either!

I first noticed this about the time I needed reading glasses, although now that I have them, it still happens.

Do you have any similar mis-readings?

You can also share any closed caption mistakes you may remember. Some of those are hilarious. Next time I see a good one, I'll write it down.

In Community Chat I alwAys read the thread title ..".SHOWME's Mr. Lucky" as "Showtime's Mr. Lucky". I never opened the thread because I had never watched that show on Showtime and figured it was boring...LOLOLOL. One day I just accidentally opened it and I laughed so hard. Imagine how silly I felt ...it is such a good thread. I also have been reading a poster as "Gardensia" instead of "Gardensla" .Duh,me!!!

I always had Gardensla correct, but I discovered on these threads the TV show is DOWNTON Abbey, not DOWNTOWN Abbey.

Thanks for starting this thread.This happens to me

in regular intervals,too numerous to pick any one

instance.I actually talked to my Dr. about this,I had

begun to worry that something was amiss,was told

it was normal. After reading the posts,I feel better

about my self, thank you all for sharing.

Don't remember ever having anything like that happen to me. Now I may misread or misinterpret what something says, but it isn't because I think it says something else.

Strange things do happen however, just not that with me.

I have tricky eyesight and am a hasty reader to boot, so I make a lot of mistakes like that. I'll see a blurry headline (or street sign) and form a theory about what it says ... and then laugh when I look closer and see what it really says. Of poster nics here, I always assumed that "sfnative's" nic had to do with science fiction. I too thought that one of our longtime threads was "Showtime's Mr Lucky."

If you hear something differently from its true meaning, this kind of mistake is called a "mondegreen."

Sylvia Wright, a forgotten humorist of the 1950s, gave them that name. When she was little, her father used to read ballads aloud to her, and when he read "The Earl of Moray [Murray]" to her she heard the lines "They have slain the Lord of Murray/and laid him on the green" as "They have slain the Lordamurray and Lady Mondegreen."

Back in the 1970s, my little brother insisted that a line in Gilbert O'Sullivan's "Alone Again, Naturally" was not "Reality got me down" but "an allergy got me down."

I'm not sure of your meaning here, Homegirl. Are you saying you are seeing the wrong words, or the writer is writing the wrong words? I've never heard of this phenomenon.

About closed captioning, I tried it for a while because my family kept complaining that my sound was too loud on the TV. It is horrible! I was so surprised. I now keep the sound very, very low and just try to catch the gist of the conversation. If no one is home, then I turn it up some. My neighbors will never hear it because there is a cement block wall between our apartment and the next one, we have no one overhead and nothing around the other three sides either. We are connected to the apartment building by the one cement wall only. It's almost like a standalone house.

When I glance at something and read quickly, yes, I can misread. I thought " Showme's Mr Lucky" was another name for a winkie! I told her so too and we got a good laugh!
