Food Delivery Services

I'm thinking about trying one of those fresh food delivery services such as Blue Apron, Plated, Hello Fresh or Home Chef. Now that I'm not working I have more time to cook but I don't like hurting for particular ingredients or worse, buy an ingredient to use in a recipe only to have lots of the spice left to forget about or let set on the shelf to lose its flavor. I just bought bay leaves the other day and of course, while looking for something else yesterday, what do I find? Bay leaves, lol. There are other things I could mention. Anyway, with one of these services, they have select menus for 3 to 5 days that they will send you the exact amount of ingredients needed for each dish. The reviews are pretty good.

I know that there is no financial savings and you still cook it yourself but the frustration of hunting for certain ingredients would be enough for me.

If someone gave it to me as a gift, I wouldn't turn it down!

I've been tempted to try them but I think they are way overpriced.

We have used Hello Fresh for almost two years and love it.......While it isn't a money saver, it is well worth the cost. Variety. portion contro and lots of flexibility with meal choices and delivery. Their customer service is also very good. Well worth a try-

I think they are overpriced but if you are a person who hates to grocery shop or who is not well organized about planning menus and making a shopping list they would save you from those tasks. Let us know how you like it if you do decide to use it. When I was working I used Schwanns a lot because the food was ready to cook, portion controlled and easy.

We used Blue Apron for about 3 months. Loved it that they did the shopping and sent the food to our home. Every meal I was taught how to cook something I had no idea how to cook it. We gave every meal a 5 star for taste when I cooked the meal.

We stopped because we were starting to travel for months. We plan on starting again. We're thinking about trying other companines also.

Our friend ordered the amount for 6 people to have a cooking party where everyone helped do the cooking together and then sat down to enjoy what they all cooked together. Was a fun dinner cooking party.

Guess I'm impulsive/impatient because about half an hour after I started this post, I went on and ordered the 2 person/3 meal selection with Hello Fresh with a $30 or $35 coupon that was on Facebook. Delivery will on on Sept. 1st. If I don't like it after a couple of weeks, I'll cancel. If I like it, I'll probably only use it once or twice a month, anyway.

onyx, you really must like them. This is encouraging to know. And you're correct....the meal variety, the adventure of trying new foods and spices, and portion control are definite pluses.

I watched a lot of YouTube videos on serveral of the services last night and although HelloFresh was not the cheapest, their company stood out to me.

I know a couple here that do a 'food service' and it's a simple system. They just package up what they are cooking for themselves. They drop off a weekly menu and their customers choose if they want it or not. It's a lucrative business for them here.

Without a doubt, Celtic, they are overpriced but you pay for convenience. The only thing they don't include in the box is salt and pepper, I believe. And maybe oil. How they include an egg without it cracking, I don't know but they do. Go figure.

I know microwave tv dinners have improve immensely over the years, that could be a thought as well.

I have been using Magic Kitchen for 2 yrs now. All home cooked food , your choice of meals They can be heated in microwave or oven.

They have a very extensive menu choice and also meals for people with medical

problems. All the meals very tasty. I have never had a problem with this company ever.

They know me by name and even remember that I cannot eat peppers..lol. You always

get the same CS rep when you call for any reason and you can add or subtract anything,anytime

you want ,with no problems you can order on an on going basis ,like auto delivery (which I

do) or however you want to and you can send meals as gifts too..Visit their

website .just type in Magic Kitchen (I can't post their link) They got my food to me on

time all through this awful snowy winter.

I do not find them expensive at all

If I know we're going to be super busy I order from Green Chef. Ingredients are organic and they use wild-caught seafood and grass fed meats. Some meals have been really good and some have been so-so.

I looked up Hello Fresh and do they only provide the herbs and veggies? No meat included for like $9-11+/meal a person? wow. (or am I mistaken) Looks like Green Chef has meat/seafood.

missy1, they have meat included. They all do if I'm not mistaken unless it's vegeatarian.

No, debc, I have time on my hands to do things I enjoy which used to be cooking before I got so tired from working. When I was younger, it didn't matter. Baking, especially, used to be my middle name. Now that I'm retired, I'm hoping to rekindle the cooking experience. Noy necessarily baking...I have too much of a sweet tooth, lol. I just don't like looking for ingredients unless I know they're all at one store. Also, not great at being creative with menus.

You might be surprised at how many fresh ingredients are wasted cooking just for two. These delivery services only give you the amount you need for the recipe at hand.

We have been getting Blue Apron for a few weeks. Really like everything about it. The produce and meat is always fresh. And they give you everything you need for each meal.

Have been pleased with every meal so far. Some things we liked so much, we tried to make it ourselves. Not nearly as good as Blue Apron. Well worth it. It becomes a family project and every meal takes about 1/2 an hour. And most are about 500 calories. Didn't think I would like the service/meals as much as I do.

Hmmm, why do you think the recipe came out differently when you tried to duplicate it? Did you find the exact spices? I was going to do the same thing....save recipe cards and duplicate.

We just started blue apron and are very pleased. DH actually ate spinach tonight and liked it!

I cook for 2 as well. Maybe for 4 since we generally have leftovers. I consider that a bonus.

LOL, I told my husband he was going to do the cooking when he retired. Since he can't boil water, maybe he'll never retire.
