Volunteers Guard Recruitment Centers

Good idea? Recruitment centers are still unarmed. Volunteers who are veterans are coming forward to protect them.

That has happened here locally. And I think it is a good idea. Perhaps it is not real protection, but the show of support for those serving, making the statement that nut jobs or terrorists aren't going to intimidate the American public, demonstrating that we won't take such things lying down, all good reasons for it to be happening.

I think it's real protection. Some Governors have ordered members of the Natl Guard to do this not only for recruitment centers but for military bases too.

I'm almost 70 years old and I feel so sad at what's happened to our country.

I've always been a letter writer, sent emails, you name it. I've had it. It does no good to do anything anymore. No one is listening. I have young grandchildren. Who knows what kind of country they're going to be living in. So sad.

Whenever I see anyone in a military uniform I've always gone up, shaked thier hand and said, "Thank you and thank your family for your service to our Country", then walk away. I recently had a young woman start crying. I had a child with their father say, "Daddy why did that lady say that"? I don't know what he said because I kept going (they were busy).

Why don't more people do that simple thing? I live in the Washington, DC area. Maybe we have more military than others, I don't know. I don't see them every day but when I do I go out of my way to say thank you.

It's just so sad everywhere these days. We must all be so very careful here in the greatest, smartest country in the world.

I just pray for all of those who are working for safety under the circumstances where they themselves could be harmed severly or killed.

They ALL need our prayers and support, but not MY criticism.

My father was a career veteran in the services for over 45 years. He served in four wars and was gone from us almost 2-4 years per war. As a child, I cried and prayed every night he would come home to us in one piece one day. Praise my heavenly Father that he did. So I know he sacrifices the entire family, especially the spouse and children manke as well. But nothing is greater that they are willing to doie in service for us all. PLEASE keep thanking them, maybe others will do it too ! I soooooo appreciate your kind heart. These people need all of the love and support they can get. You make me proud to be a veteran's daughter and military brat ! Thank you! I spent most of my childhood until late teens without him, and I was a "daddy's girl"! Sadly, he can home and shortly died from cancer after a brilliant career. I still miss him so much !

It's a pretty sad testiment to our society when a civilian citizen can legally and openly carry a gun, and for those we send to war torn countries to protect us it is illegal? And the higher ups say "we are going to look into it"?

How many in our Military have to die before these idiots wake up? Volunteers protecting our service mean in their own country becaus of some law passed in 1992? Guess they haven't yet noticed our world has changed over those 23 years.

Sad/sickening an inexcusable.

Unfortunately the chances of this happening to a recruitment center again are very slim. Seems very 'knee-jerky'.

Re: South Carolina...There's probably a greater chance someone will be injured/killed in a reglious setting than a military related facility. Maybe they should guard reglious communities.

I would think it would be fairly easy........if they are firing a gun into a crowd, church, military facility or building.........they are who you're looking out for.......return fire...............raven

No matter where you work in today's time there is a thought of danger. Small neighborhood stores even the big box stores where money is kept. Office work places the list just goes on and on. Why? . Drugs,hatred toward mankind whatever it may be. It's sad to read stories of innocent people just going for a walk and something happens. We all are trying to make a good life for ourselves and family. There are times I wonder why so much hate in these times. I can not understand. What ever happened to love and compassion to each other.

I agree. These people will once again look for places with THAT SIGN, prominently displayed on the door/window, wherever. The one with the picture that shows a handgun(with the RED CIRCLE and red line through the gun)

They are not idiots, why go where someone can shoot back? They only get there promised rewards "after" they accomplish their mission. Get killed before? No 72 rewards.

My 2 cents: I need to spend more time thinking this out, but right now I hope there's a concentrated effort to allow the recruiters, themselves, to be armed. I understand the distress about the horrible events in Chattanooga, but in some ways it "feels" like these volunteer guards are making the recruitment centers even more of a target.

Sidebar: I know it was thought that the soldiers in the reserve center were unarmed. The investigation has shown that they did have arms and they did fire upon the cowardly killer.
