7/17/15: "The recent Canadian salmonella outbreak is apparently spreading to the United States.

If you've recently purchased frozen chicken, we suggest that you cut your losses and avoid cooking it.

This is because Aspen Foods is recalling two million pounds of frozen chicken due to an outbreak of salmonella.

According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, 11 people have recently become ill with salmonella in the United states.

Three people became ill in Minnesota because of frozen chicken by Aspen Foods.

Eight people became ill in Minnesota and Wisconsin because of chicken by Barber Foods.

Thus, the salmonella outbreak is rapidly occurring.

In a recent statement, the USDA said it was concerned that "some product may be in consumers' freezers."

Trust us, you don't want to be one of those consumers. Symptoms of salmonella illness reportedly include diarrhea, abdominal cramps and fever.

Throw out your frozen chicken!

The recall by Aspen Foods applies to raw, breaded stuffed chicken breasts manufactured from April 15 to July 10.

The Koch Poultry Company of Chicago, which owns Aspen, reportedly said that the recall applies to breaded cordon bleu, breaded broccoli and cheese, breaded chicken kiev, breaded chicken parmesan, and breaded buffalo-style chicken.

Similarly, the Barber Foods recall specifically applies to 2-pound, 4-oz. boxes of "premium entrees breaded-boneless raw stuffed chicken breasts with mean kiev."

Basically just stop buying breaded chicken and you'll hopefully be in the clear.

If you do keep your frozen chicken and trust that it's safe, make sure to cook it thoroughly.

The USDA reportedly said that consumers might not be cooking the chicken well enough to fully kill the salmonella bacteria.

It must be noted that although the chicken may appear to be pre-prepared, it is indeed raw meat.

Therefore, microwaving the product is not sufficient.

The raw meat must be cooked thoroughly to eliminate the bacteria."

we received a call from schwans today regarding their products. sure enough, i have them in my freezer and we have already eaten some of them. they will be giving us a full refund the next time our driver comes around.

Yesterday, a show I watch on Hallmark channel had a looong list of bottled water that's been recalled.

I glanced for Nestle's Pure and it wasn't listed, but I do remember Wegmans, Acadia, ShopRite were listed.

many years ago when i was young and single and had my first apt. i used to buy the barber foods chicken kiev as a treat to heat up after those long days at work...can't imagine eating that stuff now.

heard in some news story that even the crumbs from the breading is contaminated and to wash all surfaces with bleach!

I read from 6 news sources every day and have yet to see this. Unfortunately, this "article" is so poorly written, it's difficult to discern the distribution of the chicken product. If anyone has further information, it would be nice to have it posted here.

The USDA says the variety of Aspen chicken items were produced between April 15, 2015 and July 10, 2015 with “best if used by” dates between July 14, 2016 and October 10, 2016.

The brands associated with this recall include: Acclaim, Antioch Farms, Buckley Farms, Centrella Signature, Chestnut Farms, Family Favorites, Kirkwood, Koch Foods, Market Day, Oven Cravers, Rose, Rosebud Farm, Roundy’s, Safeway Kitchens, Schwan’s, Shaner’s, Spartan and Sysco.

The product subject to recall bears the establishment number “P-1358″ inside the USDA mark of inspection. This product was shipped to retail stores and food service locations nationwide. The USDA says they were notified of a cluster of Salmonella illnesses on June 23, 2015.
