Just put in front of the first word with no space.

Put -- no spaces between the carats and letters at the beginning of your sentence and then at the end type again no spaces between the carats, backslash and letters.

You can change to italics as the other posters mentioned, by putting at the beginning and at the end.

You can also bold your text by putting at the beginning and at the end.
