Am I in a time warp???

I feel a little like I've been in a time machine the last couple of days reading some of the Community Chat threads and a few others. Did we go back in time when I wasn't looking? It seems that I'm in an alternate universe back in grade school... and all along I thought we were all adults here. Maybe I was wrong... so I'm posting this in the spirit of hope that people will realize what is happening here before we lose these boards entirely.

Almost any subject can be made "toxic" if one or more posters want it to be that way, even kitchen, makeup or fashion threads. Unfortunately, there are some who will interject forbidden subjects where they don't belong, either just not stopping to think first, not caring what effect it has on the discussion, or for their own agenda. It really is possible for us to discuss a lot of current events here, as long as we stick to the subject and not accidentally or deliberately derail it. Hopefully we are mostly intelligent adults and could have some great discussions about all kinds of topics as long as we remain mindful of what we CANNOT do.

Recently, there has been an endless array of arguments between posters that go on for page after page saying the same thing over and over, posters directing people to other boards and divulging what is posted there and naming names (true or not, who knows?), telling people to sign up there and use another poster's "Q" nic, posters here bringing up old grudges, posters challenging the board Standards to the nth degree, and then challenging the moderators' decisions on top of all that. "Moderator decisions are final." I wonder what part of that some people just don't get?

We actually HAVE had a number of good and enjoyable discussions here about many subjects, including current events. If they're not exciting enough or wide open enough for some, then apparently there are other places where those posters can just "let it rip". When posting here, just abide by the rules... if and when rules are not wanted, then post elsewhere. It seems to be a simple solution.

These boards are provided free for us to use and enjoy. I would hate to see QVC decide they just aren't worth the trouble any more and get rid of them....

(These are my personal observations and opinions and, as such, are neither right or wrong, they just are what they are....)

I've never seen a board that wasn't like this. The worst board I was on was the first FTV board.

People need to stop complaining.

Just continue posting or starting threads. If it gets poofed, it gets poofed.

You can't control what other people do.

Those of us who appreciate the new forum precisely for the way in which it is being moderated should do what we can to combat the extremist tactics that are forcing moderators to become so proactive. If we don't put up with it and encourage it, it will become more difficult for the few to disrupt the many, and the few will begin to stand out like a sore thumb.

ITA, kittymomNC.

But I think an interesting dynamic has occured now that the moderators give the REASONS for their actions.

They seem quite agreeable to allowing current news comments for a day or so...they most strongly object to PERSONAL attacks.

I think it's been a VERY positive development - and the people who interject banned names, religion, overt politics - in an attempt to end ALL discussion - are being shut down pretty quickly.

I guess they find this frustrating! And they are lashing out.

I don't always agree with the mods' decisions either...but I think over time it will be a happier board.

I totally agree. There are some posters here who want to do away with the moderators and some who want to be the moderators. Why not just enjoy the chats and stop being the board police?

I'm finding the revised boards to be okay. Yes, posts are deleted but at least a reason is given and that's something we've been griping about for a very long time.

In the past threads have gone off topic to include subjects that have no relation to the original post. It's the veering that caused problems so many times and that's being taken care of when the veering becomes against the standards.

I've read several posts that disagreed with the original post, or others within the thread, and they remained. Why? Because they were respectful in their disagreement, they didn't make a personal attack and they didn't bring politics or religion into it. That's not hard to do but since it's a drastic change from before it's our own behaviours that need to change. It can be done.

I registered for this board in 2007, and read here before that time.

Posters have been worrying about QVC shutting it down for the last 10 years. I don't think that's going to happen.

Missy1 - There were quite a number of negative posts...they just deleted the ones that were personal or religous attacks.

BTW - After a day or so - even the "pro thread" that I wrote was closed down.

Everyone had their say...and the moderators let us do so (while gently leading people away from personal attacks)...but now it's time to move on...it's not top of mind news anymore.

missy1, posters could say they disagreed. But many posts in those disagreement threads included religion, politics and derogatory opinions of others. It has been very clearly stated that all three of those things are forum no-nos.

Terrier, thank you, you have expounded very well on my comments. Some may take my post as a complaint, however that's not what it is at all. It's more a wake-up call... for the most part, I've enjoyed these boards for almost 3 years now and would hate to see them go away. But if some of these things are allowed to continue, I'm afraid the Q will give up on it. So far, I personally think the moderators are doing the best job they can... as I've said before, I wouldn't want to do their jobs!

And most boards have these same rules. In my experience they are more strictly enforced when there are more members. I have been on boards where it was a free for all and you can really lose respect for people you generally liked before.

You are right, moonchilde.

The mods were extremely specific as to what they were going to allow on that thread. History doesn't need to be re-written here making this something it was not. Many people saw the mods instructions and tried to direct people back to them in an effort to get them to understand.

The general people on the boards are very nice and with some good insights for the subject. Then there are some that get snarky to some posters for no reason than they are having a bad day. As far as subjects that are removed there is nothing anyone can do or say to bring it back. This is QVC's call. I seen some posters say good by they can't take it. That's ashame . I was on these boards back in the 90's . I was surprised when I joined again some of the nasty remarks people made about other poster's comments. It was like being back in school.I don't understand why we can't talk about current events on here. It is interesting to hear other views other than my own. Helps me to understand more. We all have our own viewpoints on things which is great and I feel in a respectful manner we should be able to express them. So to the ones that are giving up on the boards stay I'm sure you have so much to post about and you would be really missed. To the mods well if it is a interesting and respectful thread on current events would you let it stay? If you really think someone wrote offensive then delete them not the whole thread please.

Missy1 - There were PLENTY of comments on the thread disagreeing. The only ones removed were those that were personal or religious attacks...and discussed 2016 elections....all banned topics.

And ONCE AGAIN - even that thread that I started is now closed.

Please listen to what numerous posters have stated here - there were LOTS of negative comments.

Although I agreed with the ruling, I also think it was very unfair to those who disagreed not to be able to voice their opinions.

Frankly, I have never cared what consenting adults do in their personal lives as long as no one is being hurt.
