My post was messed up so I'll try again.😃

I saw another post with a poem about gossip and all it's damage that can be done or pain caused and wondered if people feel differently about gossiping about celebrities than opposed to gossiping about our friends and acquaintances.

I'm not sure and want to say up front I'm not making a judgement call so that's why I wondered about some opinions.✌

IMO it's a totally different thing.

Gossiping about people you know is wrong....gossiping about celebrities is doing them a favor - that's how they make their money.

In this day of social media, many celebrities set up accounts and encourage discussion. The more clicks, the more they can make in advertising.

Alsom in re: to cable reality shows, not much about them is "real". So the gossip is about fake, scripted situations anyway....similar to discussing a mini-series or comedy.

I like that poem, too, but I also get a kick out of the quote that goes something like: If you don't have anything good to say about anyone, come sit by me.

What happened to that siggy under the poem? It was there when the poem was posted the first time on another thread: "active poster *over there* but not who you think" . I thought posting the poem was a little cynical given that a lot on the thread was about another board and started for the purpose of recruiting posters to that board... it has since been closed for comments.

Yes, I do. I don't like it, especially when it is about posters on this board. And my response about the Gossip poem was on topic because the poem was originally posted as part and parcel of a thread that had a lot to do with the "crossover" posters who were admittedly gossiping on the two boards, some of which is apparently about the posters here. Hence my comment about the signature line of the person who posted the poem on both threads. My apologies if the inference was not understood.

It might be true, but it may not be either. Anybody can come here and say anything, so I wouldn't worry about it.

I'm not a fan of gossip. I think part of that comes from the way I was raised, because my parents felt pretty strongly about pausing and thinking about what we say to others and about others before we actually say those things.

I can understand the celebrity gossip, because they do have that saying that "no ink is bad ink." However, if we stop and think about it even the celebrities are often hurt by malicious gossip and I'm not sure we, the public, don't use the "ink" quote as an excuse to pass along things we probably shouldn't be putting out there into the world.

If I look past the desire to defend my human-nataure tendency to talk about others and really think about the meaning, the "I Am Gossip" piece is accurate and poignant.

Interesting poem. Gossip has no power if you don't pay attention to it. For those who participate in it OR deliberately seek to know more about what's being said, that's when you give gossip power over you.

For the most part, I think gossip is very hurtful. I don't know that I have a different standard for celebrities, just because they are celebrities. I guess it depends on what role they have. If it is because they are on a reality show, then the purpose seems to be to generate interest and a part of that would be gossip. For the most part the people in reality shows are really not big celebrities before they start the show. So it seems like they want people to talk about them to generate interest in the show. And it is reality based. Or so they want you to think it is.

But in the end, I think gossip is not helpful or productive. In the end it can be very hurtful to people.
