My dear husband is sick with Cancer and going threw Radiation. We have been going to a very highly regarded medical center for his treatments. It's a teaching hospital. I've always known that when my time here on Earth is finished I want to be an organ, tissue, anything that I can donate do so donor. Then be cremated. I just thought today as we were approaching the Medical Center about people who donate thier bodies to science. What are your thoughts?

I believe these donors are the most generous, kindest, most loving people on the earth. Even in death, to be generous enough to think of doing for others, and giving the gift of life in any form, is the reatest gift of love, and truly a Christ-like action. To Him, and to them be the glory.

My dear friend donated her body to medical research. She died of breast cancer. My niece, who is a nurse, said that the research team is very respectful of the body and keeps the face covered. You are not kept in the same area in which you lived though so that there will never be a chance that someone might recognize you. My dear friend was a good Christian woman and I miss her every day.

Please do it!

I did the paperwork w/ Southwestern Medical Center to become a full-body donor many years ago. My sister had to co-sign, got it notarized & carry a card in my wallet. There are lots of stipulations for acceptance.

It the Ultimate Recycling Act!! Your loved one can help so many young doctors better their knowledge...it's a gift of forever.

My heart and prayers for you and your husband. It sounds like your husband is being cared for in a wonderful place, and please do remember that there have been so many advancements in treatments for cancer. You sound so brave, and I can see you must be such a wonderful source of support for him.

One thing you can do at this point. Many folks do not know how much funding for research has been cut by the government. Unlike big pharma, where research is guided to areas where huge profits can be made, university research is basically funded by federal grants. So when the time is right, you could research this and contact your rep in Congress to advocate for increasing this funding. Researchers in university settings are working very hard, and working very long hours to find cures for many diseases. I know about this first-hand. My daughter is one of them.

Please know that I am so very sorry to hear of your husband's great challenges and pray the Lord's blessing upon him.

With regard to donating one's body to science and research, I was professionally associated with this on the "user end," as my position was in a large medical school and I was Head of S-urgical T-raining. This type of training, in our venue, included 80% Resident physicians, 15 % Staff physician and Trauma and 5% Research. We were fortunate to have a wonderful relationship with a local medical school with a robust donor program. All of the donors we received were always treated with the utmost respect and dignity, I can assure you, as that was one of my responsibilities (keeping eyes and ears on especially the Residents). Only once did I have to take a Resident physician out into the hall and reprimand him for making a "humorous" remark, but that was only one over many years of my service in the position.

If any are interested, find a university medical school with a body donation program or a private entity which does the same, I can recommend "Research for Life" in Arizona.
