L.A. County Folks: Need Traffic Advice

Later this month, we're finally moving the last of our belongings from San Diego to our new home town. We will depart San Diego with a loaded truck at 3:00 p.m. on a Tuesday. Question is: should we go 15 North to 210 West to 5 North to Santa Clarita (motel is there); or, 52 West to 5 North and just stick with 5 North through OC and LA, thence to Santa Clarita.

Your advice would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!!!

Leaving that time in the afternoon it's going to be ugly no matter how you go but I'd be inclined to take the 15 to the 210.

If you're concerned about traffic, I would definitely recommend taking the 15 North to the 210 West then the 5 North to Santa Clarita.

The 5 Freeway through OC and LA is a more direct route but it is a traffic nightmare especially since you will be going through at rush hour!!

Thank you, ladies, for your advice.

We had traveled up 5 and through LA to get to my Dad's in Silverlake when he was alive, so know very well how awful that traffic is, which got us thinking about 15 to 210. We know it'll be a challenge anyway and many miles of bumper to bumper, but once you've lived in California you know that's just the way it is.

Oh sweet mother of Bob Dylan you are leaving San Diego headed North at 3PM!!!! Take a knapsack of water and provisions. It is 5MPH traffic. You can't leave late at night? I vowed 8 years ago to never, ever go to San Diego unless I flew in. Last time took us 8 hours from Camarillo to San Diego, usually a 3 hour drive.

I cannot give you route instructions as I have never gone that way. But I will pray for you What a long trip. But once you leave the LA area, it is a nice drive

Take a "port a potty". No matter which freeway you take, it will be a "parking lot" at that time of day. Good Luck!

The 210 is hardly ever clear anymore and around 5 pm will be even worse, but Westbound wont be nearly as bad as East, where it takes me 30 minutes to drive 10 miles at 5 pm..

But, in general, barring rain (LOL!) or an accident, (or a styrofoam coffee cup in the road), your route is what I would take...

My vote (with decades of experience) is that you change your departure time ..... to like 10 am .... or 10 pm ....... or leave the following morning at 5 am.

I keep telling him it's going to take at least 5 hours and anyway why do we have to leave at 3 p.m.? I'm asking him the same questions as you. I think we ought to opt for spending a night in Temecula and then head north. He doesn't want to spend the $$$.

He said he would read your advice, so I've copied it over to a Word document. Keeping my fingers crossed.

I'm betting that it will take at least 5-6 hours if you drive straight through, but will probably need to stop for dinner, making it 7-8 hours.

Moving is such an EXHAUSTING process .... why make it any harder than it has to be?

Why don't you go to www.sigalert.com plug in the southern california area, and SHOW him in real time, what the traffic is like at different times during the day along that exact route?

They'll all be bottle- necked and if there's a wreck, that'll make the trip even more special.

You are going to have one heck of an ugly drive if you leave at 3. If you think San Diego traffic is bad, just wait until you hit Riverside and San Bernardino County traffic at rush hour. Good luck with your move.
