Question for current e bay sellers

My son just sold his first item on e bay. He received an email from the buyer today that said:

Hi. payment sent, it will be pending balance till the item is shipped and delivered...When you can send me (item)?

It's been a while since I've sold stuff on e bay however, I recently made 2 purchases and of course, paid in full for the items before the seller sent them to me. There is no record of payment in son's pay pal account so the guy hasn't paid yet. There is no email from e bay saying payment has been made and without that email, son doesn't have the real contact info on the buyer (name, address).

Wondering if this is a scam attempt? Buyer has only 1 other positive comment that just appeared today and the wording of the message is incorrect. Obviously I told son even if he gets the buyer's contact info, do not send the item until he's paid in full (which includes shipping).

Advice? Opinions?

Thanks for any help you can give.

One suggestion is that you can call paypal to see if he is a registered user; if it is a scam you can find that out.

I would send nothing until the entire payment is sent.

New sellers have a hold on their payments. However, they should still be able to see the transaction on their PayPal page.

If your son doesn't see the payment, make sure he doesn't ship. There are buyers out there who look for new sellers in order to scam them. Your son can open a UID 48 hours after end of auction/BIN and close it 4 days later.

As for the verified address, that's no longer a requirement for seller protection. Your son must, though, ship to the address listed on the PayPal transaction in order to be protected by PayPal. Online viewable proof of delivery is also required for seller protection.

I think sometimes it is helpful to hear about other situations with eBay or handling problems that perhaps one might not be aware of.

Kalli, I hope he was able to resolve this sale and that eBay supports him. Being a new seller on eBay . . . there are scammers out there. I've had 99% good luck buying and selling but the bad buyers & sellers are out there! The 1% are most unpleasant when you're going through it for sure!!!

I agree yes of course, never send the item until its paid.

BUT I can tell you this, not everyone is a scammer because the payment isn't there immediately. Some just don't pay the second they win the bid. People sometimes don't pay for days or up to a week.

(I know this because my husband sells cds and movies a lot and he has to wait for the payments sometimes. But he has never been scammed or had any attempts of anyone trying to scam him in 15 years).

I still don't understand why the buyer kept telling my son he'd paid by CC when it never showed up in Paypal, which was the payment method listed on the auction. Winning bidder insisted he'd paid but when contacted, E bay said there was no record so son shouldn't send it unless payment comes in. No payment after 2 more days of waiting.

Anyway, when the winning bidder was contacted, he told son to go ahead and cancel. Not sure how you cancel something that never arrived. Son is doing what e bay said and offering to 2nd bidder. If second bidder doesn't want it, the item will be relisted.

The bidder was hoping his inexperience with eBay would net him the item for FREE.

Since eBay tracks which are paid for and shows under your seller's dashboard you ""need to ship however many items"" and the little icon up in the upper right corner shows the auction(s) that you've been paid for & need to ship. Paypal does the same when you look at that transaction home page too.

Don't "Mommy" him or his eBay business at all !

If he is old enough to have the account and do business, then he is old enough to handle all of the problems, experiences, etc, without the guidance or assistance of dear old "Mommy".

Don't "infantilize " your son. Let him be his own man, even if he is just beginning and has to learn the hard way. He will be much better off in the future !!

He can ask his own questions, Mom. Let him be. Please don't stand over his shoulder monitoring his business.

Wow.... just wow.
