Prosecutor: German co-pilot hid illness from employer

The co-pilot blamed for deliberately crashing a German airliner into the Alps had concealed an illness from his employers and tore up a doctor's note that called for him to go on medical leave on the day of the tragedy, according to a statement from German prosecutors.

Police found the medical certificate and other documents during a search Thursday at the Duesseldorf home of Andreas Lubitz, the 27-year-old Germanwings co-pilot.

I just heard that authorities found a ripped-up letter which declared him 'unfit to work'. That was probably the same or related documentation that he got from the doctor.

Also, he was set to marry a woman either later this year or next year. She abruptly broke up with him because she just couldn't live with him anymore. Speculation (which is all we have at this point) is saying that this act of crashing the plane into the mountain was his final act of revenge. In other words, "If you're casting me aside and don't want to marry me, then I'll make sure you NEVER forgive yourself for what you did to me."

Very scary and sad...

Whatever his illness or reason, it will never undo what was done. I feel the fault/blame is his solely. He was a sicko and his girlfriend was lucky she left him.

Psychotically depressed with rage/anger components.....one doesn't get a doctor's excuse/note for a cold....he was physically in great shape....just internally a mess....if here in the states, the doc would've been mandated to report his psychosis.

I dunno, there's a lot of grey areas. May be treatment was for a minor case of depression, which under some circumstances would not automatically be a trigger to contact an employer. I'm only getting bits and pieces from the news so my opinion could change by the end of the day, lol. I also thought psych screening was done before hiring, may be that's just in the US.

Under care for years? Wow.

I don't know how the airline industry can deal with mental illness issues. If they somehow make it mandatory to report airline personnel for receiving mental health services, the personnel might not seek the help they need for fear of losing their jobs.

Or, they'd try to hide their employment from the doctors.

Mental health screening isn't very good, either. Many people are able to hide those conditions.

Interesting that he was under care for years...hello Freud!!! I'm just thinking that he was reallllllly not well...and maybe the doc was complacent in getting him hospitalized.....sometimes it helps to get a second opinion.....ITA Sydney....a lot more will come out.

Don't quote me on the years thing, it may have been like from late 2013 to the present. Either way, it's a bona fide mess.

ETA ~ Today they are saying he was under treatment for 'quite some time' by 'medical' doctors for an unspecified illness.

You know I understand it but there is a lot we just don't know. We don't even know if the doctor knew he was a pilot, if he wasn't hired by the airliner, he could have told him he was mechanic or a baggage handler.

These plane crashes/disappearances shine a huge spotlight on the missing pieces in security. Why can we have such careful, sometimes invasive, monitors, scrutiny, and surveillance otherwise, but not when it comes to pilots or the cockpit of an airplane?
