I know they have to lock the door for security reasons. I wonder if the pilot passed out due to lack of oxygen or something. That has happened to pilots in the past.

I don't know. BUT - why not upload all cockpit data in REAL time to the cloud?

Then we wouldn't have to rely on finding the black boxes intact...or searching for a ""ping"" that may never be found.

This would clear up a lot of mysteries we have had with flights in the last year or so.

Imagine the terror of the locked out pilot...he KNEW what was going on and where they were headed!

He could have been using the restroom. There are any number of legitimate reasons to leave the cockpit. Why he was not able to get back in needs to be solved. How long was he gone and what happened in there during that time frame. I hope the black boxes are able to help in determining that.

I think different countries have different rules regulating this. However, I do know if a pilot has to leave the cockpit, a flight attendant must go in so that there are always 2 people in the cockpit.

On Jet Blue - they have one attendant go into the cockpit...another one blocks the aisle leading to the front bathroom with a barrier. No one can get around the barrier...everyone has to wait for the pilot to finish and go back into the cockpit.

Yes they are allowed to leave the c**pit but a certain protocol has to be followed. You can not expect the pilot to not use the bathroom especially on a long flight.
