Japanese society is not always accepting of mixed raced parentage. It's a case she doesn't ""look"" Japanese.

i totally get what she's going through. i'm considered to as a hafu (mixed) by my purist relatives and am not seen as valuable to them as those who are ethnically (pure) homogeneous.

She's definitely not 100% Japanese but either are other races who represent certain countries in these pagents; I think all races have their own beauty and it's too bad girls like this tend not to even enter much less win. I personally would love to see a lovely African girl from Africa in whom I would see beauty represented from that part of the world. No only the British girls who live in South Africa.

She couldn't represent any other country. If you're Japanese, you can't have dual nationality (Norway is the same, I think). If they're going to be so particular about that, then she absolutely is 100% Japanese, whether she looks it or not.

The great majority of Americans are of mixed heritage, so we're used to it and have become much more tolerant than other nations. I don't think it's a slam against the Japanese that they feel this way, but I can understand that they want someone who represents their unique culture.

You hit the nail on the head. She has neither pale skin nor straight hair.

The judges were far more liberal in their views of Japanese beauty than the general public.

I had an unmarried aunt who always attended the Miss America pageant in Atlantic City. She'd take turns treating her nieces to a chance to go with her. We loved going. I still remember how livid she was when Vanessa Williams won. She said, "She doesn't look like a Miss America." The message was loud and clear.

I'm not a fan of beauty pageants in general. And in this case, we see how it sets people up for ridicule and possibly worse. I'm surprised society hasn't grown out of and away from these contests... but the proliferation of children's pageants shows us we haven't.

I believe she is also of mixed race. I have always believed couples of mixed race make beautiful little people. I say . . . get used to it. The next generation thinks nothing of it.
