Why Do We Say "Easter SUNDAY"?

Doesn't Easter always fall on a Sunday?

It's like saying Thanksgiving Thursday, yet, we don't say that, we just say Thanksgiving.

So, why do we say Easter SUNDAY?

Why not just say "Easter"? Wouldn't the "Sunday" be implied?

Just curious.

Probably because Easter is more than just one day, at least for many of us. It starts with Palm Sunday (to differentiate), then on to Maundy Thursday, Good Friday, and the culmination of the resurrection, Easter Sunday.

Well, I have never said Thanksgiving Thursday, but have said Easter Sunday, Palm Sunday, just handed down over the years ........... what's the big deal?

I have also said the hot summer, and the cold winter ........... just tradition, I don't think there is any rhyme or reason!

Yes, I think it's to differentiate it from the Easter season (or rather, to specify which is meant).

You do hear people refer to "Christmas Day" to differentiate it from other parts of the season or the season itself. And in recent years (mostly in regards to TV scheduling ) you hear about things being scheduled on "Thanksgiving Monday" or "Thanksgiving Saturday," which I think is just hilarious.

I don't know. I never did. It's always on Sunday, but I just call it Easter.

It's kind of like the 'tuna fish' (argh) thing. It's tuna and tuna is a fish, but it's just called TUNA. hehe

Starting with Palm Sunday, then Holy Monday, Holy Tuesday, Holy Wednesday, Maundy Thursday, Good Friday, Holy Saturday, and finally Easter Sunday.

I think for those who still do or did in the past get off the Monday after Easter which was commonly called Easter Monday for lack of a better term.... so it made sense to say Easter Sunday...and Easter Monday.

We just say Easter but I rather like the sound of Thanksgiving Thursday. I'm going to see if my family will adopt that, Thanksgiving Thursday, I like it.

Our schools were always off Easter Monday. Of course it can no longer be called Easter Break. It's is now called Spring Break.

When I was in school [ELHI], Easter was always a four-day holiday weekend, starting with Good Friday and ending with the Monday after Easter Sunday. But, I don't remember calling it "Easter Monday."

No not a catholic tradition that I know if....maybe it was just a Canadian tradiiton...I remember getting 4 days off Good Friday through Easter Monday.
