About 3/4 of the way down the first page of Viewpoints is another thread entitled, Angry people of the Internet nowadays, Why?

On post #59, I copied and pasted most of the above-referenced article, with an accompanying link to the article.

Because everyone thinks that their opinion is the "right" one and the only one with merit.

Because people treat others badly, that have differing views from them, call them bad names and insult their intelligence.

Because people are tired of being told what to think, what to believe, what to say and how to act.

But why lash out on the internet? I think finding one's inner peace goes so much further. Lashing out does not achieve catharsis, as many a study has found.

There are no rule books anymore. It's each man for himself with little regard or respect for their fellow man. Whatever happened to ""treat others as you want to be treated""? We are all our own little gods.

I so agree, jubilant. If people (or their loved ones) were on the receiving end of some of the angry things they dish out, I have to believe they wouldn't be at all happy with the "disher." But then, self-awareness -- the ability to actually see how we're treating others -- seems to be a rare commodity these days. I wonder why it's so hard for us.

I know why I think it is so hard for us and becoming harder but I don't want to start a ""religious war"" here so what I can say is....it has been said ""the greatest of these is love"" and we are sadly lacking in that today.

I was thinking of Matthew 22:35-40, important things in my faith. (Understanding that not everyone has the same belief system, but 39 "Love your neighbor as yourself" would seem to be something everyone would want to see.)

Interactions on forums like this are anonymous, so people feel free to act out in ways they never would if their identity were known and they were dealing with others in person. It's sort of like acting on stage or going to a costume party. People can't see who you really are, and you can take on a daring persona and do things you wouldn't ordinarily do -- including being bossy, naughty, argumentative, insulting, outrageous, etc. Sometimes it's kind of creative and fun to "play like someone else" -- even a not-so-nice someone else -- for a while. Even more enjoyable if other anonymous people respond in lively fashion.......

I can't figure out for the life of me why people who don't enjoy this kind of online hi-jinks don't just ignore the trolls and stinkers. By getting all angry, emotional, and hurt and posting with their hearts on their sleeves, they just feed the fire. You have to choose to engage, and there's no way anyone here can jump out of the forums and come and get you! Just ignore the baddies and they'll leave you alone!

Wherever you go....there you are. I believe this. Whether it's here or there or anywhere. If it's in your heart to be mean you will be mean....if it's in your heart to be rude....you will be rude. Of course we all mess up sometimes but I think the ""real"" person is wherever you are...and that includes here.

I don't think they want to be nasty. I think it's about, taking all they can and getting to a breaking point. It's enough at some point and then they snap?

I think many, many people feel oppressed and more incensed right now than ever before, that I can recall. I am not sure why that is, but so many people think it's their business to police others' language, thoughts, opinions and beliefs. I think a lot of people don't feel heard, and validated. That's the impression I get anyway from a lot of people.

If everyone would mind their own business, believe what they want to believe and understand others will do the same things would be much better.

There's a quote from somewhere, but I don't know or don't remember who said it. It went like this:

"People don't listen to understand, they listen to reply."

Add to the fact that people create and join all these random cliques online, and that just makes it worse.

@hckynut, you're not seeing things. There is a thread that was started like this a little while ago.
