I started an earlier thread about this and was surprised at how many file online.

What do you do with your W-2 forms or the 1099 forms you are supposed to attach to your forms? Do you not need to provide those if you are filing online?

Appreciate any feedback because I have always filed mine via mail.

Thanks.

You enter all that information online during the process. I think some online sites can even pull up that info for you.

Most tax documents are provided electronically now. The IRS collects electronic versions of the forms from the providers (employers, financial institutions, etc.) and has no need to also get a copy from the individual filer.

If you are filing online - you can either enter the information or if your company is part of a program with the IRS, you just have to enter your SS # and Company ID, and all the columns populate automatically.

They have ALWAYS had info on your income and your taxes withheld.

I am not employed because I was laid off of a job of 20 years. I'm not going to ask them their ID number at this point.

I just hope I have all the information that is necessary to file online as I'm going to a free tax service here with the local senior center who assists residents who need assistance.

I'm just new to all this online filing and it feels odd that I have the forms to send to the Feds and State but won't be attaching them.

Attach it to my copy of my printed out tax form and all the 1099's I get in too. They have all been reported so you do not need to send in again. Just put away for that particular year with your other records.

When we filed online, I did the typing while my husband read off the information to me, and I had to manually type in the W-2 information, in the boxes provided in the online program. We keep copies of everything when we are done.

You don't have to send in any copies of your W-2 form/s, in with your online taxes. As someone else already said, the IRS will already have this information from your employer/s.

I've been doing it online for a few years now. After I'm done I just staple everything together and file it with last year's.
