This suggestion was floated awhile back by someone in the media -- do you think it's a good idea?

The PD in America shouldn't have guns - just nightsticks.

My complaint, and only comment on this thread, is that the police should not be armed with military equipment.

They keyword you used is AMERICAN. Because we are not fighting a foreign enemy. These are American.neighborhoods and American citizens. Our neighborhoods should not become militarized. There is a way to handle these issues with better policing methods which are out there and are being introduced into many communities. The answer is NOT to militarize our streets. My dad was in law enforcement for 40 years, a white Irish cop in the "projects," as was my uncle. Our family has experience with this.

With all the heavy serious drug use, it definitely is necessary for them to have the latest and best weapons to try to deal with it. So many are also resisting where years ago most were compliant when the police required it! At one time police rarely had to use their weapons.

An enemy is an enemy, whether it be on foreign soil or home soil. Those trying to destroy our neighborhoods by their criminal behavior are the enemy.

I guess people don't remember the L.A. shoot out, in 1997, when a botch bank robbery resulted in people being killed, because the robbers had Ak's, and the police didn't.

The police were out gunned.

It's too late to strip the police of their weapons, however I do not agree with the idea of militarizing them by any stretch.......

The military equipment isn't an easy answer. This started in the 1990s when cities were seeing massive troubles with violent gang and police were many times out gunned by them. The Pentagon program now doesn't push this equipment and those not used by the military and not requested by police depts are destroyed. The police can get free equipment that would be scrapped or find money to prepare for a scenario that may never happen.

If the criminals are going to be using AK's, then at least give our fine men and women in blue an equal chance.

If the bad guys are going to be using high powered assault weapons, then our police should have the same.
