What's Up For St. Patrick's Day?

The mantel is decorated and green & white LED lights are strung across the top and down the sides of the fireplace.

I got a new slow cooker and am going to try the corned beef and veg in there this year, I've always done it in a huge pot on top of the stove before.

DD always makes Irish soda bread from scratch, and DH has an old record he likes to play by the Clancy Brothers.

I have a Moser green glass small jar (from the Vermont Country Store) that I overfilled with gold wrapped Rollo candy so it looks like a pot of gold.

We're ready!

I always have a corned beef luncheon with home made Irish soda bread, fresh cooked corned beef, green salad, and some special dessert. Oh, and Irish Ale. This year I am doing fresh strawberry pie. I plan on wearing my green sequined fedora for the occasion. I only have two Irish ancestors, but what the heck.

We had corned beef made in the crock pot last night. Tomorrow taking the train from Ann Arbor to Chicago for four days and the St Patrick's day parade Saturday and a wee bit of cider.

This year, as in the past few years, I have had a "Q" St. Patrick's Day thread going in celebration of the Day... We have a lot of fun talking about what folks like, dislike, what they are purchasing, etc. If you care to join in, please do so. It is usually done here on Viewpoints. No, I don't sit up all night for the thread, but folks do post on it all hours of the night......

Hi Noel,

I make homemade Irish soda bread. It is a recipe very similar to my husband's nana's recipe. It is moist and dense, not dry and crumbly like some bread recipes. I add raisins, but not caraway seeds.

I make Guinness beef stew or beef Shepard's pie. My family does not like corned beef.

The house is decorated with shamrock sun catchers in the windows. I have green lights on the small evergreens in the front yard. I have Irish wreaths hanging on all the outside doors.

In the house, I use my husband's family's Irish linens, Donegal and other Irish china and some Waterford glasses /pieces they passed down.

We were engaged on St. Patrick's Day, 31 years ago.

My mother was mostly Irish, a little Cornish, also. I love St. Pat's Day!

I have my mother's great-grandfather's blackthorn Irish shillelagh and some Belleek from QVC, not much more, at least that I can think of

It's the chicago river they dye green in the morning before the parade. Trying to get in an Irish pub is insane but we do it anyway. We've been going for the last 15 years and a lot of fun but the St Patrick's day parade we were at in Dublin was the best.

Hi Noel,

I think my decorating comes from being a teacher. I decorated for all the seasons and holidays.

I do the same at home. When my son was younger, I did a lot more decorating. Nothing fancy. It helps to have some fun and color over the LONG, cold winter.

I am sure you treasure the shillelagh.

I didn't know you were a teacher, Donna! Of course you're an expert on decorating. How about DIY? My mother was good at crafts and made a lot of her decorations, I'm not that crafty, it skipped a generation. My girl is good at it. I head to Michael's for the ready-made

We are planning to spend next winter north of Cork on the Irish Sea so we should be able to make it to Dublin for the day. SF sounds like fun also (as a former Southern California girl )..

Unless it rains hard or snows, I'll be doing the SPD parade in NYC. My husband will be working so I will go with a friend. First we will go to Mass at St. Pat's.

No corned beef and cabbage for us, instead plenty of Bailey's.

What a wonderful trip! We went to Wales and England but didn't get to Ireland, I really wish we did. It's so beautiful there.

Speaking of libations, I told DH to check the Jameson's supply for Irish Coffee. DH and I used to go to a famous Irish bar in SF, the Buena Vista (a tourist must-see). I'll have to post their recipe here, it's famous.

The Buena Vista Irish Coffee Story

The historic venture started on the night of November the 10th in 1952. Jack Koeppler, then-owner of the Buena Vista, challenged international travel writer Stanton Delaplane to help re-create a highly touted "Irish Coffee" served at Shannon Airport in Ireland. Intrigued, Stan Accepted Jack’s invitation, and the pair began to experiment immediately.

Throughout the night the two of them stirred and sipped judiciously and eventually acknowledged two recurring problems. The taste was "not quite right," and the cream would not float. Stan’s hopes sank like the cream, but Jack was undaunted. The restaurateur pursued the elusive elixir with religious fervor, even making a pilgrimage overseas to Shannon Airport.

Upon Jack’s return, the experimentation continued. Finally, the perfect-tasting Irish whiskey was selected. Then the problem of the bottom-bent cream was taken to San Francisco’s mayor, a prominent dairy owner. It was discovered that when the cream was aged for 48 hours and frothed to a precise consistency, it would float as delicately as a swan on the surface of Jack’s and Stan’s special nectar.

Success was theirs! With the recipe now mastered, a sparkling clear, six-ounce, heat-treated goblet was chosen as a suitable chalice.

Soon the fame of the Buena Vista’s Irish Coffee spread throughout the land. Today, it’s still the same delicious mixture, and it’s still the same clamorous, cosmopolitan Buena Vista. Both…delightful experiences.
