New York Raises Minimum for Tipped Workers...

$2.50 an hour - up to a minimum of $7.50...$1.50 less than the minimum in NY will be for other workers ($9).

It's about time!!!!

it would still tip in the same manner i do now.....i bet the workers are happy and the owners of the businesses not so much! this will almost guarantee higher pricing.

i dont see how they could NOT......that is a big increase for an employer!

I worked for tips from age 12 to almost age 17 and that was back in the 1950's. Even at that young age I knew that was not going to be my job during my adult life. Was paid .25 cents per hour back then, but made over $100 for 5 nights work, tips only. Needless to say that was a lot of money in that era for a boy in the 6th grade. Worked from 4pm till 1am 5 nights a week. My pay from the restaurant $10 minus tax and SS. I tip on service and how I and my group are treated, so no, this will have no bearing on the amount of my tip.

Higher end restaurants may absorb it for now - some do pay higher anyway. But the cheaper places will definitely take a hit.

What people don't realize though is that if a server does well in tips and is fairly honest about reporting them to the employer at the end of the night that hourly wage is going to be eaten up by taxes.

I will continue to tip as usual. No less than 15%. Most of the time 20%.

Now I have a question - it says for ""tipped workers"" - so does that mean that fast food workers do not get the increase? Just sit down style eateries?? Or do the McD workers already get the $9??

It's $60 a week per employee...a $3120 a year raise.

I don't think that's a lot for a good businessperson.

Yes...just the workers who aren't protected by the regular minimum wage - which is going to $9/hr. next year in New York State.

Wait staff were making $6/hr. in salary....going up $1.50 an hour - $60 a week for a 40 hour work week.

Got it. But don't forget (and I'm not sure how it runs in NY) the % of UE taxes, etc. also factor in. So it may look like only $60 at face value of the pay but the employer still faces increases in other things as a result.

I really don't care overall just pointing out that some people think it's only a flat amt. but you have to factor in what the employer pays in addition to the increase - payroll taxes, etc.

We may look at "it's only x amt. of $" but let's face it - everything goes up in price eventually anyway. So it may be hard to determine if this does cause a trickle down or not.

And we would still tip. Think of all the cheapskates who don't, though. This will really give them excuses not to leave something.

States that have enacted a higher minimum wage have seen employment INCREASE.

San Francisco, Seattle...they are doing better than ever.

When I lived there it was $2.13/hr. I worked a second job for years as both a server and bartender. I NEVER made less than at least $10/hr. This was in the 90's. I have many friends both that own restaurants and work as either managers or servers, they do very well.
